Wozniacki swerves blame for McIlroy late show

“I think he mistimed the tee time. He thought he was going to play 12:25, and, well, as we all know it was 11:25. So it wasn’t my fault,” she said.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI BEAMED with pride today at her golfer boyfriend Rory McIlroy’s heroic exploits at the Ryder Cup, and joked that she wasn’t to blame for him almost missing a tee time.

The tennis star said McIlroy, the world number one, did particularly well despite his mix-up as the European team came back from 10-6 down going into the final day to defeat the United States 14 1/2 to 13 1/2.

“It was great considering his very late arrival yesterday, almost missing his tee time,” smiled the Dane. “I thought it was very well for him to be able to stay head-cool and go out there and play so well.”

McIlroy came within a few minutes of committing one of the biggest golfing blunders of all time when he mistook which time zone he was in.

The double-major winner from Holywood was quietly getting ready to leave his hotel when he was informed that his tee-off time in his closing singles match against Keegan Bradley was in just 25 minutes. There followed a high-speed dash in a police car to get to the Medinah Country Club, where he arrived with just a few minutes to spare.

McIlroy quickly pulled on his shoes, grabbed a banana, hit some putts and walked on to a packed first tee to play the third singles match out.

The world number one pushed his first tee shot right into the crowds lining the first fairway but he soon recovered and defeated Bradley 2 and 1.

Wozniacki said the couple keep in touch while they’re playing in big tournaments, but denied that any texting or tweeting might have led to McIlroy’s late arrival.

“I think he mistimed the tee time. He thought he was going to play 12:25, and, well, as we all know it was 11:25. So it wasn’t my fault!” she said.

Wozniacki added: “It’s tough (to keep in touch) with the time changes obviously because when one is awake the other is sleeping or when one is doing something or the other one is playing.

“But, you know, we try to catch up as much as we can.”

Wozniacki, a former world number one, was speaking in Beijing after winning her first round match of the China Open against Chanelle Scheepers, 7-5, 6-7 (6/8), 6-2.

There are way too many double entendres in the quotes from Caroline….

  • He seems to have trouble deciding which ‘zone’ he’s in, although judging by the big crown around his shoulders last night one of these has been resolved!

  • If he decides to play for England then Harrington will get a place which I feel is a good thing. Regardless of who he decides to represent, he is a world class golfer and when on form he’s a pleasure to watch. Every player on that European team played some magnificent golf yesterday.

  • Head-cool??? Did she really say that?? What does that even mean? (Or maybe I shouldn’t ask!)
Well done the Europeans and a fitting tribute to Seve Ballasteros, RIP.

    • people worldwide follow the premiership because of its high standard of football.how many english players actually play for the teams.most of the clubs are owned by rich foreigners & irish players make a better living there so people support them.rory mcelroy is from ireland but trying to be british.there is a big difference.

  • Don’t care who he plays for… He is brilliant. But I did see the look of panic with the flag!!

  • Had he missed that tee time team GB would decide for him. He would be Irish then. He is such a muppet!

  • busy in his hotel room…tossing a coin to see who he will decide to play with team GB or Eire…. Eire kept coming up so he was on a best out of 20 and lost track of the time….
anyone else notice the look of panic on his face while being interviewed last nite when someone put a flag round his shoulders..and the relief on his face when he looked to see what flag it was….it being a Europe one…

    • I’d say only someone who gave a crap about that stuff would notice that…..

If he did panic its only because he has to deal with the sad reality that too many people still have such meaningless hang-ups.

    • hope the name “the kop” doesn’t relate to your support of a GB football team over an Irish football team?? would it be a bit inconsistent with your stance on rory??

in fairness i did notice the look on his face as he immediately inspected what type of flag it was.

    • He had no problem draping an Ulster flag round himself all evening.
      Decision made I’d say.

    • now that wouldn’t be a roy of the rovers picture on your profile.!!!……did he not play for England..!!….
i take your point on board about my profile name….and to be fair i should clarify that i was born in UK…to Irish parents…raised in Ireland…so i’m a bit of both… but very much Irish if that makes sense… i just find the Mcilroy stance amusing ….the guy should just come out and say he will play for GB or Ireland and get on with it. whats the big deal…….id have more respect for him if he did….

@The kop, Yeah I noticed that too when the European flag was put around his shoulders. @Justin he didn’t have an Ulster flag draped around him that was a Northern Ireland flag. An Ulster flag is yellow and red, it also doesn’t have a crown on it. You do realize there are 9 counties in Ulster and only 6 counties in Northern Ireland, your comment in my opinion is very offence to those who live in Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan.

      You’re right mea culpa
But to say that it causes offence is a bit strong

  • well if your decision who to play for is going to piss people off no matter which way you go, then I’d pick the UK and piss off only 4 million versus 60 million if going the other way.

any way, most of the people complain about this issue don’t even play golf, it’s just the old English Irish rivalry again.
