MUNSTER RUGBY CONFIRMED on Saturday evening that scrum-half Peter Stringer is to join Saracens on a three-month loan deal.
The Corkman has fallen down the pecking order at Thomond Park – behind the likes of Conor Murray and Tómas O’Leary – and the Reds agreed to the Premiership club’s offer as it was “in the best interests of the player himself”, according to a statement.
Stringer said: “I believe I still have a lot to offer and want to continue to play at the highest level.
“In the situation I currently find myself, that is outside the Munster match day squad, I think this temporary switch to Saracens will serve my ambition best.
“This offers me a new challenge, and I’m grateful to Munster management for their co-operation.”
Stringer and the club would appear to be a good fit as Sarries – guided by former by former Ulster boss Mark McCall – recently lost the services of a second nine.
Richard Wigglesworth was ruled out for the rest of the season following knee surgery while Neil de Kock fractured his arm recently and is expected to be on the sidelines for at least three months.
When contacted by TheScore.ie on Saturday afternoon, a spokesperson for Saracens said the club did not comment on ‘speculation’.
Stringer recently featured for the Barbarians in their Test match against Australia and is expected to join his new club with immediate effect.
Good move for Stringer.
Best of luck Peter. Miss you on the pitch with Munster though :-(
at least he has first team rugby to look forward to,and their a handy team
good move
As a proud Leinster supporter and a man who loves rugby, I am saddened to see a great, brilliant player leave Irish rugby. But imam really happy for stringer to play first team rugby again.
Terrible by Munster they way they have treated one of the best scrum halves we’ve ever had. At least he will hopefully get game time as there is no doubt he still has so much to offer. On a side note it’s a pity the MRSC Facebook page doesn’t allow freedom of speech with opinions like this as they repeatedly delete comments. Censorship how are ya!!
Treated like what? It’s a competitive sport and they are an extremely competitive team. Stringer is at the end of his career so it makes perfect sense to bring through talent like Conor Murray, these are the simple facts of life in professional sport.
bang on the mark faceless man
I thought he would have to finish his career in Ireland for tax reasons?
It’s only a lone deal still under contract to Munster
He will still be contracted to Munster as it is only a loan move, therefore it will no affect tax situation as he will technically return to Munster before the end of the season.
