ROBBIE KEANE FACED a race against the clock to complete his move to the LA Galaxy last night after Tottenham reportedly accepted a late ยฃ3m bid from the MLS club.
With the leagueโs transfer window closing at 5am BST this morning, the Republic of Ireland striker had just a couple of hours to agree personal terms with the Galaxy, whose current stars include David Beckham and American international Landon Donovan.
Speculation linking the 31-year-old with a move to America first began to surface on Friday, but Galaxy coach Bruce Arena declined to comment on any potential signings when asked by ESPN yesterday.
Arena was also unwilling to shed any light on the future of former Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel, who is currently unsettled at the west coast club. Due to the complex salary cap rules in the MLS, Angel had to leave the Galaxy ahead of the deadline before Keane could be signed.
Should the deal fall through, the Tallaght man is still likely to find plenty of interest closer to home, despite being told that his services are no longer required at White Hart Lane.
Leicester City boss Sven-Goran Eriksson is understood to be interested in signing Keane, though it is not known if the Championship club would be able to meet his wage demands.
Over rated, over paid n as vacuous as his wifes conk. Him n Barbie will fit in in LA.
Robbieโs wage demands have been the stumbling block to any move. He is on a nice contract at Spurs and doesnโt want to take a hit. You could never criticise his commitment to the green jersey but if he goes to LA his international career is virtually over. It wonโt be practical to travel for internationals from the states but they are offering him a fortune so itโs either one or the other.
Heโs hugely overrated, Long and Doyle are the way forward. No arguments! Even his biggest fan, Mick Mc Carthy doesnโt want! Championship or stateside for himโฆout to pasture and get a few more quid on the way.
over rated. big time. spends most of his time on the floor waving his hands about. best days are over. time to bring young blood in now. having said that he has done us proud up to 2002 world cup. after that he became anonymous.
Anonymous??
Hes Irelands best ever player and still the most important.. we have no chance of qualifying without him.
Hi is not Irelandโs best ever player. What age are you, 15? Anybody older than that would know better. Iโll list off a FEW Irish players who are far better, in no particular order:
Liam Brady
Roy Keane
Johnny Giles
Frank Stapleton
Kevin Moran
Shay Given
Paul McGrath
Mark Lawrenson
They are all Irish legends and most played in great teams that under-achieved..
Robbies record tops them all, over 50 goals for Ireland a record that wont ever be beaten.. And hes scored against the best teams in the world.
Critics like yourself will always focus on the negatives with robbie.. hes always given 100% and when we qualify for the euros im sure you will be cheering them on with your bandwagon.
If he moves to the MLS is that the end of his international career at the age of 31? Shane Long , Kevin Doyle, Leon Best and Simon Cox would all be playing in the Premier League, surely they might start getting the nod ahead of Keane?
Maybe he has had some assurances from Trap?
Millions to kick a ball around! Where did I go wrong?????
