A POST ON Twitter has led to speculation that Ireland captain Robbie Keane is on his way to play for LA Galaxy in the US.
If true, it means that Keane – who is currently under contract to Tottenham Hotspur – could soon be calling David Beckham his teammate.
Shaka Hislop, former Newcastle goalkeeper and now an analyst for sport broadcaster ESPN has set tongues wagging by tweeting last night:
Hearing that Robbie Keane is on a flight to LA Galaxy as we speak. SFX have the deal already done by all accounts.
Keane hinted earlier this week that his time with Spurs was up, while a move to Leicester was rumoured to be on the brink of being finalised. Keane has spent time with Celtic and West Ham during the last two seasons, on loan from Spurs.

The Irish Examiner reports that Keane has been linked with a move stateside over a year ago, but says that the move, if it happens, would still be a shock. The future of Keane’s spot in the Irish team could be called into doubt, although during the week it was reported in the Irish Independent that Keane had backed Giovanni Trapattoni to lead the team into the World Cup qualifiers.
If Keane was to go to LA Galaxy, he would be taking up one of three ‘designated player’ spots. Each Major League soccer team is allowed three players whose full salaries are not counted towards a $2,675,000 salary cap for the team. All three spots are currently filled on the LA Galaxy team, reports The Telegraph, by David Beckham, Landon Donovan and Juan Pablo Angel.
I have to laugh when people say that Keane is a shit footballer.
He is no Mesi, I’ll grant you that, but the last time I looked he was Irelands leading goalscorer, played over 100 times for his country and scored goals in the Premiership at every club he went to. If that is shit then you need your head examined.
He’s a grafter and nearing the end of his career so a few years in LA is a great idea. Good luck to him.
Interesting to see the comments are as belligerent as ever. How quickly people forget the likes of Korea 2002… Fair play to him I say – he has been a great servant to Irish football over the past 15 years.
page been taken over by English fans ? , eaten bread is soon forgotten , the man served his country with pride , put in a lot of great performances, unlike the terrible twins from Cork , keane and ireland , none of which were ever keen to play for Ireland
Roy Keane is one of the 3 greatest players ever to play for Ireland, the others being Giles and Brady. You can’t even compare Blobbie Keane to Roy Keane.
@Jimbob – if Roy had displayed the same commitment to the jersey as Robbie, especially in 2002, we could have actually won the World Cup in that yr or mayb reached the final. Would also have Paul McGrath in any Top 3.
The FAI were to blame for that situation, not Keane. I agree that if he had stayed that we could have won, but he was unable to put up with the injustices perpetrated on the players by FAI officials in their ivory towers. Professional players deserve the best facilities, not sitting at the back of a plane while the officials sit pretty in 1st class.
Ideals should come before national loyalties, its just a slippery slope to the bottom otherwise.
Keane has been a fantastic servant for the Irish team. Gives 100% everytime he plays. He may not be the most gifted player but if all Irish players had his passion we’d be qualifying for every world cup. Why do the Irish people feel the need to put him down at every opportunity? Hope he is a success in the U.S.
@jimmy. There are numerous Irish ‘success’ stories who deserve to be taken down a rung or 2. Robbie is definitely not one of them. Judging by the feedback to the earlier cynical, mean spirited comments on this thread – most ppl feel the same.
Good riddance, he is shit anyway. At least we wont have to look at him anymore warming up subs benches for reserve teams in the second division on loan
Irelands record goalscorer, the top European international goalscorer and tenth in the top premier league scorers of all time, yeah your right he is shit!
He could have got another year at least in the premier league, then he could have headed over. He’s still young and has a lot to offer, surprised west brom didn’t go for him
Some of the comments above in relation to Keane are disgraceful. People wonder why players renege on international commitments, but why would players bother if all they are going to get for their hard work is negativity from the fans. Keane is an example of a player who got the most out of any ability he has, and that’s something that should be admired.
Players do get paid for Internationals, not to mention all the sponsorship deals that come as a result. Most of them aren’t doing it out of the good of their hearts.
He is what he is. He doesn’t work at all for the team and plays to the crowd, waiving his arms about when nescessary, but there’s no denying he’s a fantastic goalscorer and has been a great servant to the Irish team. In a time when players use every excuse not to play for their country keane has never let Ireland down. Keane still has something to offer this Irish team and until someone else steps up to the plate and starts banging in the goals we need him just as much as ever.
Robbie looking for another big pay day I see. I do appreciate the job he’s done for Ireland, but the vast majority of his goals have been scored against poor opposition. He goes missing too much in big games.
Poor opposition like Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Russia, Colombia, Croatia and the Czech Republic? He’s always come up the goods. We’ll miss him badly when he retires. Pure hero who’s always given everything!
As I said, the vast majority of his goals came against poor opposition, I would include Colombia in that group. Russia, Croatia and the Czech Republic I would classify as average.
Very few players score against the very top opposition. I think the level you’re judging Robbie is unfairly high. For an Irish player, he’s exceptional.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s the best striker Ireland has ever had, but there’s no need to get carried away. By international standards he is average. He is very overrated by most Irish fans. If he was as good as people say he is then why has no Premiership team signed him while he’s been warming the bench at White Hart Lane for the last 2 years (or more often than not, not even in the matchday 18).

If Roy hadn’t been completely passionate and committed to playing for Ireland we would not have qualified for 2002 world cup

Irelands record goalscorer, the top European international goalscorer and tenth in the top premier league scorers of all time, yeah your right he is shit!
Its simply baffling how Robbie has those stats. He hasn’t been a good player since he was a teenager.
Pa, you are a moron.
Queue the theme tune…..
"I was moan in the USA"
Idiot

The point I was making is that they are getting well paid for their hard work.

As Ramon dunphy might say jim bob is clearly not a football person
Or maybe I’m the only one here who doesn’t let silly national loyalties blind me to the true facts.
