POLICE IN POZNAN arrested 14 people last night after violence broke out between groups of supporters in the Old Market district.
According to the online edition of the Polish newspaper Gazeta, the trouble erupted when two opposing groups began throwing bottles at each other, followed by chairs.

A police spoksman, Andrzej Borowiak, said the violence lasted around five minutes and quickly dissipated once riot police took up position.
A total of 14 people were arrested, ten Poles, a Croat and three Irish nationals.
There are no reports of any casualties during the disturbance.
The news follows reports that UEFA are set to take action after the improper conduct of Russian fans during their opening Group A game against the Czech Republic.
@ jay funk even if that was the case I think wearing an English football jersey while supporting Ireland at there first major competition in 10yrs is as thick you can be. I wonder would he year the same jersey in landsdown watching Ireland but he probably hasn’t seen the inside of that stadium since united played the league of Ireland selection.
Irish fans need to be careful they don’t get dragged into the mayhem. Its all well and good being good natured but when the batons start swinging the police wont care who they get . Hopefully all travelling fans will stay safe. C’mon Ye boys in green !!!!!
In fairness it was little trouble, these were just few morons out of couple thousand supporter there in the night that behave very well and just had fun – so kind of drop in the ocean, couple black sheep, you always get them, I just spoke to direct witness and all fans were back to fun and drink some minutes later in different pubs, or just had enough and went back home / hotels, nobody was seriously hurt, although police made some arrests. And I think the real cause of the brawl was as always – not a particular nation or people – but particular types of alcohol and just too much of it :)
Wouldn’t see this sort of carry-on from our fine rugby fans who behave with impeccable manners wherever they go. Shows you can’t put a price on a good education I suppose.
What absolute bollocks, there are plenty of well educated arseholes walking our streets, how do you know that these 3 morons don’t fall into your well educated category? Or are you deliberately on the wind up.
In fairness…? 3 Irish fans were arrested for causing trouble… Them & their type will destroy our repuatation and the good will we recieve when we travel… I am living in the Middle East & the reputation our fans have is priceless, there is a genuine affection for the Irish team, but getting involved in hooliganism is going to destro that.
If that makes any difference…any sources I have reads the Croatians started the brawl, not Irish or Polish :)
My direct witness told me, there was mixed community sitting together and drinking, but mostly Polish and Irish and then verbal attack came from group of Croatian supporters coming along – some people reckon there were actually hooligans.
To be fair, Irish people are hated abroad, nowhere more than in Poland. This romantic delusion that we are loved everywhere is embarrassingly outdated. Most of the big cities in Poland, have problems with the Irish every weekend, destroying property and fighting on drunken stag rampages. I’ve traveled throughout Europe and I have encountered the same attitude everywhere, people are afraid of us. Same story goes for Australia, ‘No Irish Need Apply’ posters going up and thousands of dollars worth of damage done every week by mostly young Irish yobs. We have gone from being one of the most loved people in the world to one of the most hated and loathed. Just a nation of drunks, sad.
@ Paula: 10 Poles arrested doesn’t surprise me :) Polish men can be quite obnoxious and jealous after their feeds of vodka and beer. You will be hearing more from the Russians too mind.
Paula: complete bull… Irish are very much liked in Poland and broadly welcomed there. What is your view based at, seriously? Have you been to Poland? Have you encountered any problems?
Paula: Polish TVN put up interview with damaged pub owner and he clearly states these were Croatians hooligans and he received tip an hour before from others there will be possibly a brawl as they coming and look for trouble informed police and they were late to come in and prevent. This brawl has nothing to do with Irish they are most peaceful and fine nation there and I’m saying the as a Pole :) Surprisingly police arrested mostly polish as they got agitated after Croatians and Croatians managed to escape caught only 1.
Yes actually, I have lived in Poland, Krakow to be precise…the Irish are despised there. In Krakow they have special cells located outside the city where the detain Irish yobs every weekend, for 24hrs. Most hotels and bars have had problems with the Irish, I have seen them spit on locals, fight, urinate on streets, wreck bars, break shop windows, defecate on floors…and these are mostly middle class. Indeed, on occasions when I was going to and fro the plane was delayed on a few occasions by rowdy very drunk Irish yobs. I also travel extensively and I am not in this instance categorizing the Irish football fans, who are by in large fine. Its time Irish people got real, there is huge problem with our image abroad, and its getting worse. I am frequently told by waiters and staff that the Irish are very loud and rude in restaurants etc…I find it both sad and disturbing
I’m not categorizing the whole nation, obviously. But, there is a very sizable percentage of Irish who get very drunk and destroy property and their reputation abroad. I defy anyone here to contact any newspaper reporter in Krakow directly and ask them about the situation. Then do the same with every other European city on the Irish tourist route. My brother, has been frequently refused alcohol in Polish bars or told there was no accommodation available, when there was. They just don’t want the hassle… don’t judge a few smiling politicians or bar owners on the TV during the Euros, ask them what they think of the Irish after the tournament is over. Drunken animals would be a pretty common phrase…I have just seen a bulletin of drunken Irish clowns on Sky News, sums it up really.
@Johnny Thats very true, Polish men can be very jealous and insecure.. especially when it comes to seeing foreigners with their women. I’ve seen so many examples of it,its pretty pathetic to be honest, seems to stem from some sort of deep insecurity or ignorance towards outsiders.
Paula: Krakow is not a great reference point that city is hammered by all sort of groups and nations who come for stags etc. and misbehave big time and cause hassle. So no wonder they may be bit reluctant to foreigners and that applies to all nations not just Irish. They don’t probably like there much themselves in Krakow especially people from Warsaw :) I honestly never heard / met any Poles despinig Irish, quite opposite actually. And don’t be too critical towards Irish I think you exaggerate bit, are any other nations saints or what? I feel embarassed for Poles many times too and not just me. The great thing about Irish is they are really friendly nation and so down to earth not lookin at you from top of their nose.

My Da is moving from Perth to Brisbane, he put his house on the rental market and was told by every agency he approached do NOT rent it to Irish.
Current joke is that the Irish sleep in shifts in the beds and never use the bathroom when there is a garden available, sounds very familiar to the polemic rants by Irish folks on groups of ex-pats working here during the property bubble
don’t give a fiddlers about how nationalities behave, I doesn’t concern me in the slightest. What does concern me is that I may have to emigrate and I would prefer not to be judged on the GAA jersey/Bermuda shorts wearing Irish thick that went previous.

Your ignorance is astounding Paula. First you assume you know the views of entire nations abroad and have an utterly warped perception of these so called “Irish middle class” you refer to. It’s not the first troll like comment you have posted here about Irish. And then you have the neck to label Polish men insecure. Just last night I was out watching the match (in a foreign country) and there were more foreigners supporting Ireland than there were Irish in the bar. I spent time chatting to a lovely Polish lady and then her Polish boyfriend who had no issues with guys talking her. It is an insult to the Polish to suggest that they are a). racist and b). stupid enough to assume a few bad apples define a nation. Cop on.

sky sports news reported that it was a altercation between Polish and Croats fans and the Irish got stuck in the middle, but that has yet to be confirmed.
But i hope the Irish don’t get too wasted, enjoy it but take your time on the drink lads, don’t be too loud!
Trouble is to be expected after our so called gracious fans “welcomed” the English team with boos. And regarding the rugby comment, not all rugby fans are posh like the D4 heads, but they still behave impeccably when on tour, same applies to the British rugby fans.
oh for god’s sake… that was banter with the English… did it ever occur to you that there were Irish, English and polish all outside the hotel? having a laugh? no it didn’t… any of you posting this type of shite been to a match in your lives?
Yeah but if the English or anyone else did it to the Irish team, we would want their team expelled or something along those lines. All good having a bit of craic but there’s a line and I believe among others that it was crossed
Chants were made by both sides. Stuff like “You’re going down with the euro” and “Thierry Henry, Thierry Henry!” along side God Save The Queen. It was a it of craic by both sides and nothing would be different if the Irish team was at the end of it. Stop trying to make a story out of something that isn’t really one.

and the clown in pic5 wearing a united jersey. sweat jasus why do people wear tops like that at an Ireland game. I’d arrest him just because of that.
Balanced it out with Lycra Ireland bicycle shorts tho so redemption is near
So wearing a football shirt at a football tournament, he was probably saving his Irish shirt for today

@Mark Larson. Yep. You right. Croatian ran away. Poles were supporting Irish at that stage, that’s why some many got arrested
Ireland 3, Croatia 1 is how I read that. the ten poles I can’t account for…
Officials in the game maybe? :P
