Seamus McEnaney steps down as Meath coach

Meath GAA confirmed Banty’s departure earlier this evening, following a largely disappointing season for the Royals.

Updated at 20.37

SEAMUS MCENANEY HAS stepped down as Meath coach, it has been confirmed.

McEnaney this evening released a statement, confirming his departure. It reads as follows:

“I am stepping down as Meath Senior Football Team Manager with immediate effect.

“I want to thank my management team and the Meath players for their huge effort, commitment and loyalty they have given me over the past two years.

“I want to thank the Meath County Board, the Meath Supporters and everyone involved in the GAA in County Meath.”

Earlier in the year, Meath had a disappointing league campaign, suffering relegation to Division 3.

However, they then exceeded expectations in the Leinster SFC, reaching the final, before being beaten by Dublin.

Yet their belated improvement was evidently not enough to prevent McEnaney’s departure.

Banty is a good coach and god help Meath if they think their atrocious season had anything to do with him and nothing to do with poor players / poor individual displays and the usual ole infighting in their county. Delusional and I wish Banty the best in the future!

So you reckon it had NOTHING to do with Banty and ALL to do with the players? It’s a bit of both to be fair don’t ye think. If your managing a team and they get relegated in the league, the manager must take responsibility for that. He had the bottle to blood some young players this year and he must be applauded for that.
But a young hungry manager, preferably from within the county, should be brought in and given a 3/4 years to get us back on track.

nothing to do with Banty or the players – a lot to do with the suits in the county board who have run GAA into the ground in meath

I don’t think so plenty of young capable players were introduced in 2012 and so far this year I haven’t seen anything like a master class from the Dubs

Meath are a fine footballing county and will be back. Might be a few years off catching the top two or three though.

It’s a step backward for Meath football yet again. The position of manager is just about the biggest poisoned chalice in inter county football today.

i’d say it was nothing to do with regulation (although obviously it didn’t help), it was more to do with the obsession the county board have with having a native meath manager. They dont want these foreigners coming in telling us how to play football – they might learn something. They even think they can do a kenny daglish, kevin keegan and bring back sean boylan to lead meath to success ( course kenny and kevin weren’t too successful second time out).

No obsession, sure didn’t they hire him in the first place??
He said he would need another 3 years to develop the team and at cost of 100k a year ‘expenses’ that wouldn’t be worth it.
Meath need to build, we’re nowhere near competing right now, so get a young forward thinking manager and give him time to bring us forward.
