IRELAND STRIKER ROBBIE Keane made his return to competitive action in the MLS last night, starting for the LA Galaxy against rivals New York Red Bulls in the Western Conference semi-final.
A low-scoring encounter, the game was decided by a fifteenth-minute strike from the Galaxy’s Mike Magee.
The midfielder stroked home a defence-splitting through ball from David Beckham and, in doing so, secured a valuable away goal for the Californians.
The highlight of Keane’s performance came early in the first half when his curling effort from left edge of the box dipped over the head of Red Bulls keeper Frank Rost and ricocheted off the right upright.
The Ireland skipper was withdrawn in the 82nd minute and played no part in a bizarre post-match incident that saw combustible ex-Barcelona defender Rafa Marquez and Galaxy midfielder Juninho dismissed for their roles in a fracas involving Landon Donovan.
