Arguably the greatest Limerick footballer ever has retired from the inter-county game

John Galvin is calling it a day with the Treaty.

LIMERICK VETERAN JOHN Galvin has announced his retirement from inter-county football at the age of 34.

The news was first reported by the Limerick Post, while the Limerick Leader hailed the Croom native as “the greatest Limerick footballer of all time.”

Galvin, who now plays his club football with Cratloe in Clare, was on the losing end in four Munster finals over his 15-year senior career – 2003, 2004, 2009 and 2010.

“The demands on time and more importantly a person’s body are huge these days,” he told the Post.

“I know I could have given it one more year but I feel it is best for me and for Limerick that I move on.”

“Privileged to have played with such a fantastic footballer and passionate Limerick man that is John Galvin,” team-mate Ger Collins said. “Leader on and off the field.”

This is a role model, kills himself training for a game he loves so he can represent his county with little chance of winning a medal or getting any financial reward for it.

Considering as well this guy came from the middle of Hurling country in Limerick.

It’s a pity he didn’t get his all star and Munster medal, but will always be remembered as a fantastic player.

Gave possibly the greatest midfield performance ever in 2010 when they should have beaten cork aet in limerick.
Should have been given an all star that year…pity it was given to paddy keenan out of sympathy for the meath game

Yet people from Louth will try and tell you he deserved it more and it had nothing to do with what happened in the Leinster final

Great servant to limerick football , who deserved a munster medal at least. At his peak he would have walked onto any county team. #respectforlimericklegend

Gave us some serious performances over the years! It’s a pity for his sake that those monumental performances always ended up being on the losing side – Kerry 2004, Cork 2009, Kerry & Cork 2010

The All Stars should recognise people like John Galvin instead of those big names who win all the trophies .
Also John is one hell of a Basketball player as well.

Gave us many a great moment in a Limerick shirt. 2010 Munster Final in Killarney was his greatest game for me, he single handedly dragged Limerick back into that game. Even though we lost by 3 in the end it was a mammoth performance from the man.

Happy retirement John, thanks for the memories.

Incredible player. Have been privileged to see many of the greats in the flesh over the past 25 years or so. Galvin’s performance in the 2010 Munster Final in Killarney is the single greatest individual effort I have witnessed to date.

He’s the reason limerick ran us close in those Munster finals. He’s one of the most underrated internet county player I’ve seen and deserves the credit of the likes of Declan O Sullivan got when he announced his retirement but sadly, he won’t.

    A respectful Kerry man
