Italian club booted out of the league after players struck down by fake injuries

There were comical scenes in the derby game between Nocerina and Salernitana.

ITALIAN FOOTBALL CLUB Nocerina were excluded from the third division championship yesterday  for their role in a farcical derby against Salernitana which came to be dubbed the “hate match”.

The game, played on November 10, 2013 descended into chaos when several of Nocerina’s players faked injury in order to be taken off after receiving death threats from their own ‘ultra’ supporters.

The fans issued the threats in retaliation to being banned from a game which had to be called off after 21 minutes when Nocerina were left with only six players on the pitch.

Stadium bans were initially handed down to the ultra supporters accused of issuing threats to players.

But on Wednesday the disciplinary body of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) took the drastic step of excluding the entire squad, club management and club from the Lega Pro third division championship.

A number of players and officials were also handed lengthy bans and the club was fined 10,000 euros ($13,700).

A statement by the FIGC said: “Nocerina have been excluded from the Lega Pro championship for sporting fraud and will be assigned by the Federal Council to one of the leagues’ lower categories.

“The club has also been fined 10,000 euros. The decision comes into effect immediately and has been announced to the Lega Pro and its stakeholders.
