Irish Eye: Delap and Whelan get Stoke back to winning ways

Want to know how your favourite Irish footballers got on across the water this weekend? We’ve got all the details right here.

Premier League

Rory Delap & Glenn Whelan (Stoke City 3-1 Blackburn Rovers) Delap is normally the creator of Stoke’s headed goals rather than the scorer but he put Pulis’s Potters one up in the 28th minute with a lovely flicked header from Jermaine Pennant’s cross. Whelan doubled Stoke’s advantage after the break, his piledriver taking two deflections before wrongfooting Paul Robinson.

Npower Championship

Richard Keogh (Brighton 2-1 Coventry City) Former Irish U21 Richard Keogh was in the wrong place at the wrong time, deflecting the ball into his own net after Joe Murphy had made a fine save from Craig Mackail-Smith just seven minutes in.

Joe Mason (Cardiff City 1-0 Nottingham Forest) Mason came off the bench to grab his third goal of the season, heading home Peter Whittingham’s cross in the 70th minute.

Noel Hunt (Ipswich Town 2-3 Reading) On a week when he declared his ambition to make Ireland’s squad for Euro 2012, Hunt capped a remarkable fightback by firing home Reading’s winner three minutes into stoppage time. Earlier, Ipswich’s on-loan striker Daryl Murphy headed Paul Jewell’s side into the lead in the 55th minute.

Scottish Premier League

Darren Randolph (Motherwell 0-0 Dundee United) Randolph continued his miserly form in the Motherwell goal, keeping out Dundee United to record his eighth clean sheet of the season.

Richie Towell (St Johnstone 3-1 Hibernian) With new boss Pat Fenlon watching on from the stands, Richie Towell gave Hibs an early lead at McDiarmaid Park only to see St Johnstone bounce back to win 3-1.

Have you heard the one about the non-league game with FOUR injury-time goals?

  • I really look forward to this column every week, but is there any real reason it’s predominantly about goalscorers? Is there any way to have another dimension to it. It’s nice to read that Dave Forde is doing well, but how about some more? Without, obviously, increasing the workload too much…

Keep up the good work anyway.

      Thanks, Peter.

To explain – in order to keep the feature to a manageable size, it generally focuses on really subjective criteria like goals, clean sheets, red cards etc. Naturally, there are more goals than any of these other “events”, but that’s the reason behind the inclusion of things such as Richard Keogh’s og and Darren Randolph’s clean sheet this week.

The worry was that if we started to include more detailed stats (which Irish players actually played this weekend, how many minutes they played), it would become overly long and a little bit more of a specialist read than a general interest piece.

What kind of things did you have in mind? If we can add another dimension to the piece, we’d love to.

    • I understand why it’s as it is then. But I suppose an extra added dimension for me would be, perhaps just for the Premier League, getting an idea of how the Irish lads on the team played. For example, Jon Walters played ninety minutes, and played well, but because he didn’t get a goal or a card, he doesn’t feature. If it wasn’t a huge increase in your workload, maybe people would like to know about all the Irish lads playing at the top level. Just a thought, not sure how it’s pan out.

As it is, this is one of my favourite features on the site, so don’t think i don’t enjoy it.

  • No problem Niall, he’s been out injured for a while!

  • Daryl Murphy got the first goal in the Ipswich Town v Reading match where Noel Hunt got the late winner. Both are from Waterford, both are Irish, if the title of this article is ‘Irish Eye’ that’s a bit of an oversight.

  • I hope Trap reads this. Might open his eyes to the amount of Irish players that are actually out there.
