David Forde – 7 The Galwegian goalkeeper didn’t have a huge amount to do but was assured when he needed to be. Couldn’t do anything about the deflected equaliser, however.
Seamus Coleman – 6 Wasn’t bombing forward as much as you would have like to see but a solid performance from the Everton man.
John O’Shea – 6 A number of late tackles earned him a yellow card in the first half. The skipper was visibly gutted at the final whistle.
Ciaran Clark – 5 Inexcusably dispossessed by Junuzovic when he should have put his foot through the ball, which led to the goal but recovered from that before being taken off in the second half.
Marc Wilson – 6 Linked up with McClean well and is undoubtedly our best left full-back right now.
Jon Walters – 8 Did an admirable job on the wing and put away his penalty excellently before adding a second goal in first half injury-time. Was switched up front for the final moments.
Glenn Whelan – 6 Good ball to Long in the lead-up to the penalty. Also took over from McClean on corner duties and picked out Walters at the back post with his first one.
James McCarthy – 7 Followed up his man-of-the-match performance with another accomplished performance.
James McClean – 7 Some really good play on the left flank from the Sunderland winger but is still inclined to give possession away too easy at times.
Conor Sammon – 6 Competed for headers all night long and was caused the Austria backline problems which was exactly what he asked to do. However, you feel Ireland have better options in attack.
Shane Long – 8 Drew the foul from Pogatetz for the penalty, deserved a second with a super piece of improvisation to backheel off the post and, overall, led the line brilliantly.
Substitutes:
Sean St Ledger – 6 Slotted in at centre half in place of Clark for the final 18 minutes but couldn’t prevent Alaba’s late equaliser.
Too many deluded asshat fans supporting him too.
Their dogma of…trap got us to the euros or…sure we don’t have quality players is really beginning to annoy.
Trap is insulting to all Irish players he thinks where all inbred farmers we have a decent team he constantly picks wrong team and tactics. It’s a complete joke at this stage the man doesn’t give a bollox
In fairness to the FAI, I think they do want him out but naively contracted himself and Tardelli before the Euros, and it would cost over €2million to fire him, and more again to bring in a new manager, methinks we have this campaign to put up with this ignorant arrogant old man!

He has to go, that’s it, stick a fork in this campaign, its done. Let him go, get interviewing managers such as McDermott, Coyle, etc. give them time to work with the ‘new batch’ and give it a real push for the extended euros in France.. be great if we could keep Manuela though.
Would liked to have seen Conor Sammon impress tonight, just think the step up to international level was a bit too much for him. Plus I think hoolahan might have been the better option playing infront of long and dropping back if needed.
Agreed, would love to see him do well, but he’s just not good enough. Thought the panel were fairly kind to him, he ran like mad, but took poor positions, poor touches and most of the time poor passes. Also won very little in the air. Great energy, but just not good enough unfortunately
You won’t be watching for a while then!! There’s no point in sacking him now, he might as well finish out the campaign as no other coach will want to take over when there’s nothing to play for. We’ll be stuck with him until the end of the year.
Another Trap fcuk up…under pressure because we could’nt hold onto the ball for the whole 2nd half.Solution…bring on Green who’s renowned for his ball retention and leave Hoolahan warming the bench. Fcuking genious.
Why didn’t Trap make a substitution in the 91st minute to run down the clock?? I’m gutted for the team who played their hearts out tonight but with an ultra-conservative manager and a shortage of technical ability on the pitch we gave the ball back to the opposition and invited a sucker punch. Delaney won’t make a move against Trap, he brought him on so that won’t happen. The fact that he is clueless is irrelevant. We needed to put our foot on the ball. Slow it down. Have a look around to see what’s on. The only player we have that can do that was getting splinters in his arse. I am getting tired watching his teams playing now
Traps interview after wad scandalous!!! “We not Germany,We not England” if u go in to any match with that attitude your only looking for a hiding!! What’s he doing???? Telling players that “sur give it a go if we win we win if not i didn’t expect us to” CLOWN!!!!!
Big problem with lumping Coleman as a 6 alongside Whelan and Sammon. He wasn’t roaming forward asuvh because everything went down the left to McLean. 1 dodgy back-pass but was excellent up to that. I’m presuming it was a typo and demanding promotion to 8. As soon as you can. Thanks!
Just insert “as much ” where you see the error. Prizes for first one to get it right. First prize is a 1 hour passing lesson with Glen Whelan. The sooner you can give it to him the better.
You call Whelan a bad passer but he was needed to deliver a decent corner kick that James McLean was incapable of doing, he also set up Longs run that led to the penalty. Whelan over Green was a call Trap got right but fresh blood was needed in midfield in the 2nd half
I agree that trap is paid enough money to know what to do with 20 minutes to go and coming under the pressure we were. That said, I see a lot of positives from those two games. Walters on the wing worked well in both games. He works so hard and protects Coleman, yet at the same time he causes problems in set pieces. I thought salmon ran himself into the ground. Everyone is giving out that long was taken off. After Sweden there was no mention of long. Trap persisted with him tonight and he had a fantastic game. There is life after Richard dunne. Our centre backs performed very well in both games. McClean impressed in both matches, showing a life after duff and mcgeady. McClean can cross a ball unlike mcgeady. I don’t expect us to qualify but that team made me proud on Friday and again tonight. They worked very hard. Wearing the green shirt meant a lot to them. Austria and Sweden have to play twice. We are still in mix. Remember euro 88 and how we qualified. When you are not loosing games, u never know. This team has better shape than euro’s or in previous games. Lets hope that fai know who they want to replace trap and the replacement knows he is getting the job. He can hit the ground running if he is taking all this in.
Sickener of a late goal but that is a decent Austrian side, we played well I thought and could have won it.. Trap will go after this campaign (whether or not we go to Rio), but no point sacking him now..
Could have won it?????? We were winning and he decided to camp us in our own half instead of bringing on wes to control the tempo and maybe even kill the game off with another goal….. Trap is too negative with no belief in the team, im sick of it
I’m no fan of Trap at all, I thought the team did enough to win the game.. then a sucker punch at the end. The biggest mistake was giving Trap a new contract before the Euro’s, but that’s Delaney for you.
In rugby, the offside rule prohibits players from gaining an advantage from being too far forward. The specifics of the rule differ between the two major codes.
Conor Sammon “competed for headers all night long”…How many did he win??? My granny could compete for headers all night. “Caused Austrian back line problems”…when??? Who came up with these ratings???
Shane Long properly ran a marathon to warm up….He is everything Ireland wants …………………….Glad Walters did well Great player – I dread the manager is ruining the young players confidence with his crap….Sammon got an awful time on Network2 – NOT DESERVED!
Austria were better than us and its trapattonis fault..i dont get it..he wasnt on the pitch playing, was he ??why are the public like sheep and getting behind the media in their hunting down of trapattoni ..
He seemed to be the last person to spot that we needed fresh legs in midfield and up front and is the only one in the Aviva thats paid to spot these things. We needed to freshen things up before the halfway point of the second half. The end of that game reminded me of another 2-2 draw we had when Steve Staunton was manager, hanging on for an eternity in the second half and getting punished at the death.
We were supposed to be at home !
We looked more comfortable last Friday . Tonight was dreadful & they were the only team who looked like scoring . Gutted !!!
I read this paper every day ( for the last number of years) and very rarely make a comment, Ireland were rocking tonight and were unfortunate to lose..:. yes ..: old Irish clichee, last minute goal, but be fair, we only got excited cos we drew with Sweden……
and before you go off on the what do women know about football..:: think…
and don’t be sexist!
I thought Samon deserved 7. He was asked to play to a game plan and he did just that, he had a touch just before the penalty, two touches just before the back pass attempt, yes he was due to be changed but he put himself about and I thought he proved some people wrong.
Exactly, people never gave him a chance before hand, the only thing that was going to change people’s minds if he scored… I thought he was being fouled all afternoon into the bargain…..
Leo how exactly did he trouble them? He didnt win any headers and won no tackles. And on top of that any challenge he should have made were extremely half assed. I never want to see this chancer in an irish shirt again, absolute joke!
Won his fair share of headers, and his tackles weren’t great, but he put the pressure on, and the defenders panicked when he did….. Seriously, he performed better then we all expected… I think the looming shadow of hoolahan has alot to do about how we think about sammon….
no leo no! What I think about Sammon has come about from the dismal performances Iv seen him have. I thought he was a joke with Wigan, way way out of his depth and its the same with Derby. Look at his stats…they’re horrific. defenders panicked…Im starting to think your taking the piss out of me?
Sammons header back to whoever played the ball to long for the peno, that was a defenders ball but the presence of sammon panicked him… And their defence was shakey all night long. I don’t think he’s great, he is pretty ordinary, but I thought he played well, was fully committed and did what the manager asked him to do! And don’t call him a chancer, he doesn’t write the press about himself, he was asked by the manager to serve his country and as a proud Irishman he’d gladly do it…. and who else are you going to pick in the forwards(i.e does not include hoolahan) Doyle is struggling to score with a club that seems set for league 1, keane injured, cox, not much better….. The right decision would have been to put Walters up font with long and slot in Brady or keogh…. Will be interesting to see what he does when he has pilkington available….. I don’t want to start a fight with anyone here, I just thought sammon did justice for himself and the manager… Half arsed challenges? C’mon, he’s looking to impress, and as a dub, born and bred in Ireland, he was fully committed… My opinion so lads, if ye react, don’t react with insults, no need for it here(not that ye have!) …..
Trap has to go now. A new manager gets a handy start with the Faros and hopefully build some momentum going into Sweden and Austria. We don’t have much chance but that’s our only chance
Have to disagree about Sammon. He might not have scored but he was harrasing the Austrians and keeping them on the back foot a lot of the night. Its what Ireland can do.
Damon did nothing more then justify his selection. He worked hard going back, something hoolahan doesn’t do, and he caused problems as from the outset Austria could not deal with the long balls… The second was more of a case of tiredness…. Trap did not make the right subs, but up until wilsons header, they were still playing football…. And when you get tired, there isn’t much more you can do then hoof.. We can still qualify and trap deserves his chance with basically a new team… We need 12pts from 15 now though, tough but do-able…. I still believe!!!!!!
Say what you want, sammon performed much better then we all expected.. We can still qualify,(and when I say qualify, as in we still have a really good chance, people seem to see it as more ‘mathematically’ possible then anything else) the Austrians have a better team then Sweden, I expect them to beat them, us to best Sweden, all three of us to lose to Germany,(meaning Sweden are basically out of it) all of us to beat the faroes and Kazakhstan, leaving the game in Austria as the decider…. There’s not much better out there then trap as well to manage this team… Brian mcdermott? His CV is lousy enough, and then you compare it to traps, ugh stop….
There wasn’t much wrong with his touch tbh, he didn’t exactly give away the ball everytime….involved in the first goal…. The worst thing about trap tonight was nearly the fact that he said we are not England! They couldn’t even beat Montenegro! We are probably better!
Salmon was appalling. He lost 9 50/50 headers in a row, had no touch and never looked threatening. 1 goal in 34 appearances at Wigan. Should be no where near first choice player did this country.
can we stop putting all the blame on Trap. Fair enough some of his selections are strange but the players should have closed that game out. They had the ball several times in the opposition half towards the end and instead of keeping it and holding it in the corner they kicked it away cheaply. The players useless decision making is entirely down to them, not Trap. Players have to take fair share of blame. Have absolutely no idea of how to close out games
Normally a big fan if Trapattoni but the sense of fear, and a real lack of self belief was clear to see in last 15 minutes. No strong captain and manager who was hoping to hang on.. Desperate stuff
Whelan was ball watching for the equaliser… Got sucked in and didn’t even see the man behind him that he should have been marking that lashed it into the net. Should have been a minus rating for him if possible!
With the exception of the playoff game in Paris we have been playing dour defensive football under trap. We Got the easiest group and play off tie v Estonia for the euros. Trap relied on a lot of luck to get us to euros. Luck will only carry you so far. Time for a new manager who will select the best players and let them play football

How the f**k can we keep Trap when he makes stupid decisions like taking off Long, bring on Green, keep Sammon on, and leave Hoolahan on the bench!!!
Cause the fai are a bunch of clowns, stevie wonder would be able to see that trap is the biggest waster going… Complete fool, to old to stubborn
Too many deluded asshat fans supporting him too.
Their dogma of…trap got us to the euros or…sure we don’t have quality players is really beginning to annoy.
Trap out…he’s a fool.
Trap is insulting to all Irish players he thinks where all inbred farmers we have a decent team he constantly picks wrong team and tactics. It’s a complete joke at this stage the man doesn’t give a bollox

He still should
Trapattoni must go……..
He will after the World Cup qualification is over
Trap = 2 : manager cost is that game
Ben, did Paul Fennessy ask you to do this last minute?
he’s been on thin ice lately so after that result Id say he bottled it.
6 for Wilson????? Are you mad? He was shocking.
Trap is losing the plot. His interview was shocking. His players are contradicting him. He’s a mess.
He wasn’t happy at being asked about resigning!!!. His key phrases appear to be “at dissss moment” and “oppotunidee”…Liam stood up for him though what a shock!
At least the debate on the box with Dunphy & co is better than the second half …..
Long was world class tonight. Didn’t deserve to be taken off. Also, I can guarantee that if Hoolahan was brought on, we would’ve held on.
He can’t even speak English.
He started interview in German !!! WTF ??
He has to go, that’s it, stick a fork in this campaign, its done. Let him go, get interviewing managers such as McDermott, Coyle, etc. give them time to work with the ‘new batch’ and give it a real push for the extended euros in France.. be great if we could keep Manuela though.
Would liked to have seen Conor Sammon impress tonight, just think the step up to international level was a bit too much for him. Plus I think hoolahan might have been the better option playing infront of long and dropping back if needed.
Sammon didn’t net anything, tackle no good either….
Agreed, would love to see him do well, but he’s just not good enough. Thought the panel were fairly kind to him, he ran like mad, but took poor positions, poor touches and most of the time poor passes. Also won very little in the air. Great energy, but just not good enough unfortunately
Who chooses these ratings? 6 for Coleman?!
agreed, Shane Long easily man of the match but Coleman was excellent tonight, he’s coming of age the young lad
Good fight bill and Liam haha
Until he goes I’m never watching this crap again! Football is supposed to be played with enjoyment and he encourages anything but, he sickens me!
You won’t be watching for a while then!! There’s no point in sacking him now, he might as well finish out the campaign as no other coach will want to take over when there’s nothing to play for. We’ll be stuck with him until the end of the year.

Pretty much agree with that bar Sammon and Whelan I would have given them a 5….Wilson probably deserved a 7 was very solid
Taking off Long was another massive blunder
WHY?
David that sum it up really. I’m sorry but what is this man seeing that we aren’t. Another sad night. Don’t like to say it but this charade of trapatoni has to end

Couldn’t agree more Jim. An absolute joke. Why does he try to prove us all wrong with his stupid decisions? Baffling some of the decisions he makes

I’m no fan of Trap at all, I thought the team did enough to win the game.. then a sucker punch at the end. The biggest mistake was giving Trap a new contract before the Euro’s, but that’s Delaney for you.
Ah, sure… sh1t happens. On the bright side the Rabodirect is still on…
Rugby players great bunch of lads……………
Offside in rugby please explain?
@Liam great comment.
Would you like it for rugby league or union?
In rugby, the offside rule prohibits players from gaining an advantage from being too far forward. The specifics of the rule differ between the two major codes.
It was a joke luv! No need to explain :)
Looks like copy and paste off wikipedia to me
Offside in Rugby is simples:
In union: If your in front of the ball your fecking useless!
In league: If your in front of the ball, your going to die!
We’ll at least Trap reinforced my belief that fish have no brains.
Ben you must have watched that match from inside a Salmonfish bowl to give him 6 and that analysis. He was a poor 2 and offered nothing.
we played great the first half but what we always do is when were winning is defend, defend defend
We are stuffed for this group now. Trap should go and let a new manager to settle in.
That would be ideal and make sense. Unfortunately the FAI can’t afford to sack him!
Conor Sammon “competed for headers all night long”…How many did he win??? My granny could compete for headers all night. “Caused Austrian back line problems”…when??? Who came up with these ratings???
Ah hard luck #boys in green
Shane Long properly ran a marathon to warm up….He is everything Ireland wants …………………….Glad Walters did well Great player – I dread the manager is ruining the young players confidence with his crap….Sammon got an awful time on Network2 – NOT DESERVED!
Austria were better than us and its trapattonis fault..i dont get it..he wasnt on the pitch playing, was he ??why are the public like sheep and getting behind the media in their hunting down of trapattoni ..
Because he picks the team, decides the tactics to be employed. Go to a game, it’s not that hard to understand, honestly.
Gutted !!!
Words cannot describe how arrogant trap is with his useless tactics
Could anybody tell me how sammon got on the field in the first place, not to mention, last the full game! Joke
Its not a paper.
I thought Samon deserved 7. He was asked to play to a game plan and he did just that, he had a touch just before the penalty, two touches just before the back pass attempt, yes he was due to be changed but he put himself about and I thought he proved some people wrong.
Are you having a laugh! That comment is nearly as bad as sammons chronic performance
Exactly, people never gave him a chance before hand, the only thing that was going to change people’s minds if he scored… I thought he was being fouled all afternoon into the bargain…..
What wrong did sammon do lads? Ill gladly take the abuse!! He troubled their two centre halves all night and chased everything!!!
Leo how exactly did he trouble them? He didnt win any headers and won no tackles. And on top of that any challenge he should have made were extremely half assed. I never want to see this chancer in an irish shirt again, absolute joke!
I didn’t see sammon trouble 1 defender tonight! Duno what game ye watching lads! Theres a difference between trying & actually doing something
Rating players who are playing exactly to a manner dictated to do so by their manager is s crock of sh1t.
Every competition are you fed up listening to !!!!
It’s mathematical possible to still go through
Have to disagree about Sammon. He might not have scored but he was harrasing the Austrians and keeping them on the back foot a lot of the night. Its what Ireland can do.
I can see the crowds flocking to the Georgia friendly now – not!
Watch the FAI being creative in how they give the tickets away for free.
*sammon, f*cking predictive text!!
Is he really? Thats probably why he didn’t have any energy.
Did well in the air but seemed to loose most with his feet.
Sammon.
can we stop putting all the blame on Trap.
Brady will get high blood pressure defending trap. Every thing was going well until traps interview and then all hell broke loose.
Ireland will not get anywhere near the world cup final unless they get a good manager and a proper team.
That’s cricket Harry
Traps right, were not brazil! Players are just not good enough. We as fans need to accept that.
Hoolahan would have helped I know.
