Dublin GAA plan to align with Nama, build new stadium

The county board’s report also launched a thinly-veiled attack on Leinster for the “subliminal exploitation of Dublin’s unique sporting hue”.

AN AMBITIOUS DEVELOPMENT plan has been announced by Dublin GAA, which includes a new 25,000-seater stadium located on the outskirts of the city.

Officials also plan to enlist the assistance of Nama among others, in order to help them deal with any potential infrastructural problems they may face.

The Dublin GAA Strategic Plan 2011-2017 is outlined in a document available on the Dublin County Board’s official website, and includes the targets of winning the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship every three years, and its hurling equivalent every five years.

The plan, which was launched by Dublin GAA Chairman Andy Kettle, GAA President Christy Cooney and Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Leo Varadkar TD, aims to help grant Dublin provincial status in terms of funding and representation on the GAA’s committee.

The report also acknowledges the competition posed by Leinster rugby:

“We can’t copyright a colour but the subliminal exploitation of Dublin’s unique sporting hue by our competitors has not gone unnoticed.

“Mutual respect is essential in Irish sport, yet the appeal of a flourishing professional franchise is still a real challenge in the struggle for hearts and minds in Dublin, while the demographic shift continues to distort traditional values and interests.”

In addition, it aims to increase revenue per annum by £1.5m between now and 2017, while also seeking to increase GAA participation in Dublin by 10% in that time.

Oh my god…. They win their first all Ireland in ages and they totally lose the run of themselves.
Building a new stadium in the middle of a property bust????
Planning on winning a hurling all Ireland every 5 years even though they haven’t won one since 1938????
Accusing Leinster Rugby of stealing a colour????

How about winning a few more titles before losing the head altogether….

Also, they want provincial status in terms of funding and representation???
Munster, Ulster, Connacht, Leinster…. and Dublin
Christy Cooney and Leo Varadkar should be ashamed to have their names associated with this ego trip

Dublin has a greater population than the other counties in Leinster put together, than Munster and than Connacht.

Nobody is denying that Dublin has a large population but there is a big difference between total population and active GAA participants.

@ Nivag. No, Dublin does not have a greater population than the rest of Leinster put together. Get your facts straight before spouting rubbish. According to the 2011 census, Leinster had a population of 2,501,208. County Dublin had a population of 1,207,603. If we subtract the Dublin population out of Leinster we get 1,293,605. i.e. Leinster w/o Dublin still has a greater population than County Dublin. Meanwhile, Ulster has a population of over 2 million. Would you suggest breaking Ulster up into Antrim/Down (similar population as Dublin) and Rest of Ulster? It’s as simple as this – if Dublin wants to be represented in the Leinster competitions, then it should receive similar treatment as the rest of the members who are, after all, equals. If Dublin wants provincial status in terms of funding and representation, then perhaps they should have their own intercounty competitions involving Dublin, Dublin and Dublin, and no-one else.

@ Brian You rightly point out that as of 2011, Leinster’s population was 2,501,208. However, Dublin’s population was simultaneously recorded as 1,270,603 and not 1,207,603 as you incorrectly pointed out. This would give the rest of Leinster a population of 1,230,605, which is lesser than Dublin’s by 39,998. Apology accepted, Brian. Ulster, does indeed have a larger population than Dublin, although it would be fair to say that the ratio of those culturally predisposed to the GAA to those not would be far more even. Of course Dublin would like to take part in Leinster competitions, just in the same way Galway does, as does that other hotbed of Leinster hurling, Antrim.
Ronan makes a good point about active GAA particpants though. I’d like to see the figures.

Im from Dublin and I agree that this is ridiculous. I mean, its not like anyones gonna mix up Cork and Man Utd anytime soon. But lets not act like the passport idea wasnt silly. Also many, not just from Dublin, view the relentless ‘republic of cork’ and ‘real capital’ business as tedious and pathetic. Its always Corkonians at the ready to criticise Dublin at any juncture. (Cue vehement accusations of ‘ego’ etc etc).

They should make any new stadium available to all sporting codes and the same should apply to the larger ones. This means each code can use a stadium that would cater to the expected demand.

Even the mentioning of ‘copyrighting a colour’ is pathetic.

Even the Corkonians didn’t have the brass to suggest the idea during Munsters heyday.

Do you think it would be suggested if the irish soccer team, rugby team or international rules team for that matter played in the states official colour of st. Patricks blue?

Leinster only use the lighter blue jersey in the Heineken cup. This is similar to the original blue they traditionally played in before the professional era, the darker jersey has only evolved in the last 7-8 yrs and as another poster notes Leinster rugby predates the GAA. If anything, with it’s wider european exposure and the fact it represents a whole province, Leinster is potentially a bigger brand.

They should rebrand Nama as the NEW LOTTO – I hope they are not in talks with sports clubs as the country is expecting a return of funds for the assets they control. If they are acting as a charity – then the chairman should be fired. Their brief is to earn as much for the tax payer as possible.

I wonder if Estonia asked Dublin GAA for permission to wear blue in the capital tonight? What about the Gardai? They are mainly country folk and they wear blue all the time. How does Dublin GAA feel about that? I was really surprised when I read their “proclamation” . I had thought all that bullshit had been confined to history. But I guess with Fianna Fail annihilated in Dublin and the Dail out of bounds for the faithful, they have to put their time and thoughts into something else.
