GAA round-up: here's everything you need to know about yesterday's Club Championship action

With a number of crucial club games taking place over the weekend, here’s a review of what you may have missed.

Football

Wicklow County Final

Rathnew 0-10 St Mary’s 2-05: St Mary’s secured a surprise upset over Rathnew to win the Wicklow Senior Football Championship. Two goals from Paddy Byrne helped St Mary’s attain the win, despite a late flurry, in which All Star Leighton Glynn and Tommy Gill registered a series of points to ensure a tense finale.

Leinster Club Championship First Round

Athy 1-08 Edenderry 1-05: A spirited fightback enabled Athy to triumph in this thrilling encounter. They trailed 1-2 to 0-2 at half-time, however a much-improved performance in the second half was rewarded on 56 minutes, when Danny O’Keeffe’s goal sealed their win.

Summerhill 0-11 St Brigid’s 2-15 Brigid’s showed their class to ease to victory in this one-sided affair. Summerhill fought diligently, but goals from Ken Kilmurray and Barry Cahill all but ended the game early in the second period, exposing the gap in class between the two sides in the process.

Portlaoise 2-12 St Pat’s 1-14 (Aet) Portlaoise endured a significant scare yesterday. Despite a strong first-half performance, a Ray Finnegan-inspired comeback from the Louth champions brought the game into extra time. Goals from Craig Rogers and Karl White ensured the excitement continued in this period, before Cahir Healy was on hand to score a dramatic late winner.

Leinster Club Championship Quarter Final

Garrycastle 4-11 Longford Slashers 1-06: Garrycastle secured a comprehensive victory over their opponents yesterday, with two goals from James Dolan putting the Westmeath side into a 2-7 to 0-4 lead. Despite a better performance from the Longford champions in the second half, late goals from James Duignan and Alan Daly completed the rout.

Ulster Club Championship Quarter Final

Glenswilly 0-09 Latton 0-10 A tight encounter saw the Monaghan side win by a single point, despite having established a sizeable lead with minutes remaining. Latton were four ahead with ten minutes left, before Glenswily threatened a comeback, with points from Michael Murphy, Joe Gibbons and Brian Farrell guaranteeing a nervy finish.

Roslea 2-05 Burren 1-15 A strong second half showing from Down champions Burren proved to be enough, despite the admirable spirit shown by their opponents in the second period. Roslea, meanwhile, failed to make the most of an early Seamus Quigley goal, while both sides ended the game with 14 men, with James McGovern and Niall Cosgrove receiving their marching orders in the second half.

Ulster Club Championship Semi Final

Ballinderry  1-10 Crossmaglen 0-17 Crossmaglen did just enough to progress to the final, after they scored a late flurry of points. It was typical of this unpredictable affair, as Balinderry appeared out of it at half time, as they trailed 0-11 to 0-4. However, their swift second half comeback was almost complete when a Conleth Gilligan penalty left just a point between the two sides, before Crossmaglen’s late show ensured normal order was resumed.

Hurling

Munster Club Championship Semi Finals

Ballygunnar 0-12 Na Piarsaigh 3-09 Two goals from Shane Dowling helped Na Piarsaigh to victory, in an encounter in which the scoreline didn’t necessarily reflect the game, given that Ballygunnar were leading at half time.

(INPHO/Lorraine O’Sullivan)

Carrigtwohill 1-10 Crusheen 0-19 Crusheen will appear in their first-ever Munster final, following a dominant second half performance. Their six quick-fire points after the break meant Mickey Fitzgerald’s goal in the dying stages was scant consolation for Carrigtwohill.

Leinster Club Championship Semi Finals

Oulart 3-12 Clough Ballacolla 2-11 A high-scoring encounter saw Oulart ultimately triumph, with goals from Eoin Moore, Shaun Murphy and Rory Jacob, despite a late comeback from their opponents prompted by a Willie Dunphy goal.

Ballyboden 0-15 Coolderry 1-18 Dublin champions failed to make the most of an excellent start against Coolderry. Barry Teehan’s goal helped the Offaly side storm into a 1-11 to 0-8 half time lead, while a solid second half performance secured their passage into the final.
