BRIAN LENIHAN HAS chosen the right place to learn the Premier League ropes, according to new Hull City team-mate David Meyler.
Meyler met the highly-rated defender last weekend ahead of Lenihan’s medical and reported £250,000 transfer from Cork City.
Arsenal, Celtic and Brighton were also thought to be interested in the 20-year-old who instead chose to join Robbie Brady, Stephen Quinn, Paul McShane and fellow Rebel Meyler in Hull’s sizable Irish contingent.
“I think he had a couple of options but he was persuaded by another Corkman to come,” Meyler hinted today at Ireland’s training camp in Malahide.
Lenihan, who has been capped by Ireland at U21 level, has drawn rave reviews this season for his part in Cork’s title challenge.
Meyler said: “He’s a fantastic young talent and hopefully he’ll kick on now and do really well.
“I’ve watched him a couple of times with Cork City when I go home during the summer. I think he’s a terrific player and he’s going to do really well for himself.”
He added: “He’s what, 19 or 20, and he’s the same size as me so that’s a start anyway.
“He’s an athletic right back, he’s young, he’s eager. He’s a bright young fella and he gets his head down and works hard.
With a manager like Steve Bruce he’ll get great coaching. We’ve some fabulous defenders at our club and they can all teach him the ropes.
“Please God he’ll do really well and kick on for Hull and break into the Irish team in a few years.”
