Irish teenager Adam McDonnell signs for Ipswich

The highly-rated 17-year-old joins the Tractor Boys from the SSE Airtricity League First Division outfit.

IPSWICH TOWN HAVE signed Irish midfielder Adam McDonnell from Shelbourne.

The 17-year-old, who came through the ranks at Shels before making his first team debut last January, will link up with the Championship club, managed by former Ireland boss Mick McCarthy, in the coming days.

“Shelbourne’s first team player, Adam McDonnell has today signed for Ipswich Town and will leave Tolka Park for Portman Road over the next couple of days,” reads Shelbourne’s statement.

The management of Shelboure Football Club knows that they speak for all our supporters, when we wish Adam all the best in his future career on the other side of the Irish Sea.

“We would also like to give credit to our Schoolboy Section, where Adam played on the Under 17 team, managed by Derek Farrell, before graduating to Martin Murray’s Under 19s. Johnny McDonnell added him to his First Team squad following strong displays for the Under 19s.

“We hope that Adam will not be a stranger on his trips home and that he will come down and visit us here in Drumcondra.”

Shelbourne face St Patrick’s Athletic in a rescheduled FAI Ford Cup round three replay at Tolka Park this evening.
