'It's a blatant manipulation of the rules' - Ferguson left fuming over Fryers move to Spurs

The Manchester United manager has urged the FA to look into the transfer of his former youth player.

ALEX FERGUSON WANTS the Premier League to block former Manchester United defender Zeki Fryersโ€™ transfer from Standard Liege to Tottenham.

Fryers, who made six appearances for United after graduating from the clubโ€™s youth academy, was out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of last season and looked set to join Tottenham.

When the two clubs could not agree a compensation package, the left-back was able to join any club in Europe for free and he instead moved to Standard Liege on a two-year contract.

However, former England Under-19 international Fryers was only at the Belgian outfit for six months before moving to White Hart Lane on Thursday.

Ferguson accepts that Spursโ€™ actions were not in breach of the current rules, but the United manager is furious that his club have lost out on a sizeable fee for the 20-year-old.

โ€œThereโ€™s nothing we can do about it but I think that really we should, first of all, register our discontent. I think the league should look into it,โ€ Ferguson told MUTV on Friday.

I think the registration should be stopped until they investigate it thoroughly. Thereโ€™s bound to be a trail, either mobile phones or e-mails, that could give you the full story of it. I must say Iโ€™m disappointed in Tottenham. For whatever reason, a club that size has decided to go down this route. Iโ€™m disappointed. To me, I think itโ€™s a blatant manipulation of the rules.

โ€œTottenham did nothing wrong as he went to Standard Liege. They tried to buy him from us at the end of last season but we couldnโ€™t agree terms.

โ€œThen they took him on trial, came back from Portugal and said they couldnโ€™t afford him.

โ€œAll of a sudden he signed for Standard Liege but I expected him to go to Tottenham in the January window.โ€

Tottenham responded to Fergusonโ€™s claims by insisting they had done nothing wrong.

โ€œZeki Fryers was out of contract in the summer. We had looked in to the possibility of signing the player but were unable to agree a deal on the terms Manchester United were asking,โ€ a club spokesman said.

โ€œZeki chose to go to Standard Liege, who paid compensation to Manchester United. Zeki enjoyed his time at Standard. However, when Standard sacked their manager in November Zeki wasnโ€™t part of the new managerโ€™s plans, which he accepts and understands happens in football.

โ€œUnfortunately, a combination of this, and the fact that he had become homesick meant he wanted to return to England and his representatives made contact with clubs in England.

โ€œThis afforded us a second opportunity to sign the player and as per FIFAโ€™s solidarity contribution mechanism, Manchester United will receive five per cent of the transfer fee we have paid.โ€

They did want him! But what heโ€™s questioning is Spurs, who wouldnโ€™t pay the compensation over the summer, buying him off Liege when he got โ€œhomesickโ€โ€ฆโ€ฆ Stinks if you ask me

As if Fergie hasnโ€™t signed promising young players from clubs before they sign a professional contract so united donโ€™t have to pay for their development. Fergies just sickened its happened to him this time albeit the long way around.

Eh he was on a pro contract, look up the rules of out of contract players under the age of 23 and you might just understand how it works

Iโ€™m just using the still amateur players being nicked from their clubs before they sign a contract as an example. He was out of contract and left. United should of tied him down to a new contract if they didnโ€™t want to lose out. As soon as he leaves Fergie should have no say in where he goes.

Well you should look up other transfers for nominal fees there are some much higher and 3million is what he cost spurs , a steal of he can develop but I donโ€™t think he will see much action at spurs
