HARRY REDKNAPP HAS admitted he would have Paul Scholes in his Euro 2012 team if he was appointed the new England boss.
The 37-year-old midfielder made a surprise return to Manchester United last month having announced his retirement at the end of last season and played a vital role in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over rivals Liverpool on Saturday.
Scholes never truly flourished during his time in the England set-up and often found himself pushed out wide in order to accommodate the likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. He decided to hang up his international boots at the age of 29 in 2004 and later revealed that he was “fed up” with the atmosphere within the team.
Redknapp is the overwhelming favourite to be installed as the new international manager since Fabio Capello’s resignation last week and the Spurs boss stated that he would relish the chance to work alongside Scholes, who he says is similar to Spanish stars Xavi and Iniesta in his style of play.
Let’s be honest, you would love to have Paul Scholes in the Euros this year,” Redknapp said in The Daily Telegraph.
“He’d be in your team, he’s that good. Whoever’s there (as manager) would love to take him, I’m sure.
“You’d love him to play. He plays like the Spaniards, like Xavi, or Iniesta – he does not give the ball away.”
