Lessons learned: Wozniacki vows to bounce back after 2012 rankings slide

The Dane began the year as world number one, but ends tenth.

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI SAYS she will emerge stronger from her topsy-turvy 2012 campaign.

The Dane finished 2011 ranked number one in the world, but after a disappointing past year she found herself barely clinging on to a place inside the world’s top 10.

But after winning both the Seoul and Moscow WTA Tour events near the end of the year, Wozniacki is hopeful she can continue that form into 2013, ahead of January’s Australian Open.

“I started the year as number one, and now I’m 10 in the world – still top 10,” the Dane said.

“The most important thing is I’ve learned a lot this year, I’ve had some injuries, I’ve been sick, it’s disappointing when you can’t play to your full potential but I finished off the year very well.

“I won two tournaments and got to a final, some really good results which has given me some confidence going into the new year.”

The 22-year-old was speaking after being defeated 6-2 7-6 (7-4) by Maria Sharapova in an exhibition match in Sao Paolo, and she said she enjoyed playing in Brazil.

“I really love the crowd here, they’re very open, they have a lot of fun,” Wonziacki said. “I really enjoyed it.

“To have the (2016) Olympics here in Brazil in Rio, it will be just amazing, it will be fun, everyone will just love it – it will be one big party.

“For the athletes that will be amazing, because to have packed stadiums for people who are so into the sport, that is what you train for, it will be amazing.”
