‘STOP! STOP! They’re already dead’ was probably the most used Simpson’s quote on Twitter last night as Germany produced one of the most shocking results any of us can remember.
This wasn’t any old team they beat 7-1. This was the World Cup favourites, in Brazil, with a generation spanning unbeaten home record and Joachim Loew’s men eased to a six-goal victory.
The result got us thinking here in TheScore.ie though about other sporting hammerings. Here are some that sprung to mind.
1990 Super Bowl (XXIV)
San Francisco 49ers 55 – 10 Denver Broncos – The 49ers were expected to win the game, they were 13 point favourites but nobody expected them to outscore the Broncos by eight touchdowns to one and have the game won by half-time. The 45 point winning margin remains the largest in Super Bowl history.
2001 All-Ireland SFC semi-final
Meath 2-14 – 0-5 Kerry – This was expected to be a close game with one or two points in it either way. Instead, it turned into a rout. Meath would go on to lose by double scores in the final to Galway.
2012 Heineken Cup final
Leinster 42 – 14 Ulster – Ulster had qualified from a very tough pool including Leicester and Clermont and though Leinster were the defending champions it was expected to be a tight affair. In the end it broke records for the largest winning margin and most points scored in a Heineken Cup final.
But that’s enough about us, what about you? What’s the worst unexpected defeat you remember a team taking? Let us know in the comment section below.
9-2 against Manchester City while I was Managing Waterford United…got sacked after that…Football Manager is Cruel sometimes
I’m impressed ye scored twice
Yeah I got beat 10-5 while managing Norwich v United in the PL, we finished top scorers in the pl that season with about -20 score diff. Still a highlight of my FM career.
I got relegated with Leeds in 2001 after losing the final game of the season (3 times in a row I might add). I just couldn’t face restarting the computer again at 4 o’clock in the morning. Never played that game again after that day. Couldn’t even look at the computer for about 6 months, never felt as low.
Losing to Munich in CL final after a perfect season up to that….. There was no way defeat was possible……. Thank goodness for save games….. Won in 2nd attempt….
Once beaten 4-15 to 0-0 in a Junior gaa match. As a corner back I felt mildly responsible.
60-0 defeat for Ireland vs All Blacks. The Irish had just come close to a famous victory the week before and New Nealand made us pay dearly. Record international defeat that day. Ouuch.
12 nil in a 2nd year indoor soccer league semi final. More than a goal a minute. The fact we could only field 3 players in a five aside left us a little exposed at the back
13-0.. Under 11 football in Clare really exploits any weaknesses in your game xD
I’m from Mayo, take your pick!
Hope is a terrible thing john!
West Ham 2 – 1 Tottenham.
Last day of the season and Arsenal passed us out to get champions league. Sick!
Like the spurs players on a dodgy lasagne. Lol
What part of north London are you from?
I was between the sticks the very day that a team from Inchicore beat us 15-0 playing under 12′s To make matters worse, it was all over the second page of the Striker supplement of the Herald on the Monday. That was a rough week in school!!
I can’t believe you’re THAT Stefan Ruddell. My condolences pal!
Was getting beaten 8-0 during an under 14 soccer game for Ballycumber Rovers. We threw on 4 overage lads at half time, lost 8-3.. Unsurprisingly it was my only underage soccer game
Travelled the worst journey of my life on the Cork to Swansea ferry, and stayed in a kip, all to watch Munster lose to the hand of Neil Back. Sick in every way on the ferry home.
Man United 8-2 Arsenal
I managed to watch the whole match, once it was done I promised never to watch it again! Terrible performance, terrible day!
Black Sunday in 2006 for Leinster fans, Blue Saturday in 2009 for Munster fans!
Great/dark days depending on which side of the fence you’re from, and both pretty much spankings.
Playing Junior D football, the pinnacle for any young Gaelic footballer.
Spirits were high after winning our first game in months the previous Sunday. We carried that fight into the first two minutes of the next game to take a 1-1 to no score lead.
We didn’t score again and lost by 49 points.
9-0 nil a Munster schools quarter final first and last time I started in goals
In
2002. Shels were knocked out in the 1st Qualifying round of the CL by a shit team from Malta, funnily called Hibs. Having drawn 2-2 over there, all we needed was a scoreless draw. Having dominated the return game at Tolka and squandered loads of opportunities we conceded a 90th minute goal. Heartbreaking. Even the highs of future european runs never blotted out that stain in my mind. FAI cup final defeat to Sligo on pens in 2011 was tough to take also. I know these examples are not hammerings or anything, but they are the ones that you remember.
Lost our GAA Feile by a point, never recovered.
In premier manager 98 I got relagated with man utd but won champions league same year.next season in championship and also in champions league
Worst defeat and worst spanking are 2 different questions. You should emphasise the latter.
2008 All Ireland Hurling final, Waterford Vs Kilkenny. After a decade of great Munster hurling play, us in the deise thought our time as also rans in the all ireland might be over. I couldn’t go due to buisness travel, I ran around schipol air port to get wifi and then went to a net cafe to get live updates. I still can’t go through Schipol without getting a bit depressed.
Upon leading Hereford to the premier league we faced stiff competition from the likes of Hull, Barnsley and Stoke, sitting at 15th in the table….we were summoned to bigger opposition WEST HAM on the 23rd of November…..8-1 was the final result…..needless to say it was my last time playing Legendary in Fifa
We were against the favourites in an u 14 league game, we scored 3-5 in the first ten minutes. Ecstatic moment. Final score. Us 3-5 . Them 15-15
Division 2 of the Red House league (lowest level of organised adult soccer in Europe, if not the world). Inch B’s vs Castlebridge.
We were down 4-0 at half time after playing with “the hill”.
Got it back to 4-4 after 65 minutes. They lost all discipline and then had a man sent off.
We pushed on for the win, but ended up losing 7-4.
Bar conceding the 7 goals, we were very solid in defence that day
8-1 in a U12 match against Athlone
Some of these are hilarious. Gas the way us blokes never forget. Mine was semis of a ‘tournoi’ in France. We were the far better but running around like headless chickens. The better team won. Would still love another 5 mins of that match…
