Is this the worst debut ever?

Maximilian Hofmann was sent off for giving away a penalty in the FIRST MINUTE. Oh dear.

YOU’VE GOT TO feel for Maximilian Hofmann.

The 19-year-old, who is the younger brother of club captain Steffen, was making his debut for Rapid Vienna against Sturm Graz in the Austrian Bundesliga yesterday – but didn’t last very long.

The centre-half chopped down an opponent inside the box after just 46 seconds and was then shown a straight red card. Sturm Graz scored from the spot-kick but Rapid went on to win 4-2 despite playing the rest of the game with 10 men.

It’s got to be up there as one of the worst debuts we’ve come across in awhile. Jonathan Woodgate’s first game for Real Madrid springs to mind – the English defender scored an own-goal before being sent off against Athletic Bilbao.

Jonathan Woodgate’s debut for R. Madrid, own goal and sent off, slightly more high profile as well than the one above!

Liam O’Brien’s debut for Manchester United v. Southampton around 1986 or 87, when he got sent off after around 85 seconds. The match was being shown live on RTE to feature his debut.

Great stadium, great crowd, im green with envy.
People in Irl are more concerned with Gazza’s antics then the LOI. Joke of a country for supporting Irish footbal/soccer!

When the league of “Ireland” only has a large number of Dublin clubs there will never be any interest. Need to start again. Have a club in every county. Start as amateur league until able to move to professional. Copy what the Gaa did and in a 50/100 years there will be a proper league.

Why should historic Dublin clubs get scrapped just because you want to follow the GAA model.

Nonsensical argument when you consider that A: Galway has already proved itself incapable of supporting a professional football club how do you propose that Leitrim can all of a sudden support even an amateur senior National League club.

B: Dublin is an awful lot closer to Westmeath than London, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, Barçelona, Madrid, Leeds etc. Geographical spread doesn’t seem to stop those clubs attracting Irish followers does it?

Jigsaw – I agree, far too many small clubs. One team per county and Dublin should have 2. Start again
