Breakfast at Bebeto’s: All you need to know from last night’s World Cup action

Germany scored five goals in 18 minutes to dump the host nation out.

GERMANY RAN RIOT at Estádio Mineirão and became the first ever country to score seven goals in a World Cup semi final. Brazil’s players wore ‘Forca Neymar’ caps and t-shirts ahead of the match and badly missed their playmaker as Germany tore them asunder. By the time the final whistle was shrilled, the Germans had triumphed 7-1.

The hosts struggled without their captain, Thiago Silva, in the centre of defence as Germany racked up a dolly mixture of superb and faintly ridiculous goals. Toni Kroos and André Schürrle scored doubles, with record-breaking Miroslav Klose, Sami Hhedira and Thomas Müller heaping on the woe.

Winner

Miroslav Klose broke the all-time World Cup goals record when he tapped in his own rebound to put Germany 2-0 up. It was the striker’s 16th goal at the tournament and his fourth consecutive semi-final goal, having netted was back in 2002 to set up a final clash with Brazil. Ronaldo, who set the 15-goal tally, won out in 2002 but Klose secured satisfying revenge 12 years later.

Loser

David Luiz was at fault for Germany’s opener and was caught in midfield as the deficit went from 3-0 to 4-0 in 12 horrendous seconds. He failed to close down André Schürrle for the German’s seventh goal. He seemed determined, too, to get sent off in the closing stages but could not get close enough to any red and black shirts to do any meaningful damage.
