The side between Ireland and a World Cup final; who are the English women's rugby team?

It’s a massive day for our women’s rugby side.

Who are they?

The English women’s rugby team have been playing competitively since 1987. They are one of the most successful teams in the women’s game having completed the Grand Slam six years in a row from 2006 to 2012.

What is their World Cup record like?

Impressive. England have taken part in every Women’s Rugby World Cup since its inception in 1991. They were victorious in 1994 beating the United States 38-23 in the final. However, they have not won the tournament since, losing out in the final on the last three occasions.

How has their World Cup been so far this year?

England topped their pool to qualify for the semi-finals of this year’s World Cup with a tense 13-13 draw against Canada in Marcoussi. A try from captain Sarah Hunter midway through the second half, along with Emily Scarratt’s conversion and two penalties was enough to see England through. Convincing wins over Samoa and Spain meant that England could afford to settle for the draw, knowing that they would top the pool and knock New Zealand out. Centre Emily Scarratt has proved prolific for England so far this campaign picking up 35 points in three games, 30 of which were thanks to her boot.

How experienced is the squad?

England have one of the most experienced squads in the tournament with 12 members already having won over 50 caps. Prop Rochelle Clark has won 93 caps for the side and is a vital part of the team. This is Clark’s third World Cup and, at 33 years of age, most likely her last. She will be determined to add a World Cup success to her name before retiring.

Where are they ranked in the world?

England are currently ranked in fourth place in the official IRB World Rankings. They are the highest ranked team left in the competition after the exits of New Zealand, South Africa and Australia and are one place ahead of Ireland in the rankings.

Who is their most important player?

It’s hard to single out one player as being pivotal to the England team as there are bucket loads of quality in their ranks. However, centre Emily Scarratt has proved so far to be a very important asset thanks to her excellent kicking. The experience of Rochelle Clark is also vital to the team and will be ever more so in the final rounds.

What is their record against Ireland like?

In one word (from an Irish point of view): foreboding. England have played Ireland a total of 19 times in the history of the two nations, emerging victorious in 18 of those meetings. Ireland of course had that famous 25-0 victory in Ashbourne last year on their way to the Grand Slam title but England emerged victorious the last time the two sides met beating Ireland 17-10 in February.
