Wolves chasing Brian McDermott after holding talks with Bruce

The Royals manager has become one of the favourites for the job left vacant by Mick McCarthy according to reports.

READING’S BRIAN MCDERMOTT has emerged as a surprise candidate for the vacant job at Wolves.

The Premier League strugglers are in the process of filling the position after sacking Mick McCarthy and with Alan Curbishley ruling himself out of the running, former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has become the bookies’ favourite to take over.

Bruce held talks with the club but has yet to hear back about meeting for a second interview and is believed to be growing impatient.

Reports last night suggested that Brighton’s Gus Poyet was being lined up for talks but according to The Daily Telegraph, Wolves are looking at bringing McDermott to Molineux.

The ex-Arsenal midfielder took over Reading in 2010 and was denied promotion to the Premier League last season by Swansea, who beat this side 4-2 in the play-0ff final.

Currently sitting third in the Npower Championship, the Royals are again pushing for a return to the top tier but, if these reports are accurate, their manager may not be around come the end of the season.

Wolves owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey, who are heading up the search will be aware that 50-year-old McDermott would not cost a huge amount as he is on a one-year rolling contract.
