Talking points

Olympic history made: Switzerland’s Dominque Gisin and Tina Maze of Slovenia were both awarded gold in today’s women’s downhill final — the first time in the history of the Games that first place was shared in Olympic Alpine skiing.

Gold for Dutch speed skater: Stefan Groothuis of the Netherlands stopped US athlete Shani Davis from winning his third Olympic title on the bounce by clocking 1:08.39 to claim top spot in men’s speed skating.

German victory in luge doubles: Reigning world champions Tobias Wendl and Tobia Arlt beat off competition from Austrian brothers Andreas and Wolfgang Linger to earn gold in the luge doubles.

British curlers lose out: Canada overcame Great Britain 9-6 during a thrilling encounter in women’s curling to remain undefeated alongside Switzerland.

Birthday girl Agosta helps Canada to hockey win: To celebrate turning 27, Meghan Agosta scored twice to lead Canada to a 3-2 triumph over the US in women’s hockey.

Frenzel claims nordic combined gold: Germany’s Eric Frenzel went into the 10km cross country race with a six-second lead thanks to his win in the morning’s normal hill ski jump, and held on for victory with Akito Watabe of Japan in second and Norway’s Magnus Krong taking the bronze.

Second gold for Russia duo:  World champions Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov claimed a gold for themselves and the Olympic hosts as they led a Russian 1-2 in pairs figure skating.

Already team gold medallists, Volosozhar and Trankov led all the way to seal the title ahead of team-mates Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov.

US win in halfpipe: Kaitlyn Farrington upset three former Olympic champions to take women’s halfpipe snowboarding gold.

The American had failed to make the final directly from the heats, needing a second chance semi-final to progress, but produced a stunning second run to score 91.75.

They said what?

I want a calm and quiet life, no fighting, no wars. But still, I will be training for myself. This morning when I was having a shower, I looked in the mirror and discovered that my body is getting older.

“It is my last competition because I don’t have the self-confidence any more to get good results in racing.”

South Korean veteran speed skater Lee Kyou-hyuk announced his retirement from the sport today after the 35-year-old could only manage 21st place.
