Wimbledon Mens' Final: Federer wins second set to draw level

The tempo has yet to drop in this intriguing final between the imperious Swiss and the hopeful Scot.

ROGER FEDERER HAS forced his way back into the Wimbledon Mens’ Final with a fine display to capture the second set 7-5.

Federer has lost many sets in a career dominated by match and title wins and he started the second set with a win to love on his serve.

Murray dropped behind 0-30 in the second game of the set but got the game to deuce thanks in no small part to a flicked overhead shot that was acutely angled. There then ensued a number of break and game points before Murray made it 1-1.

The Fed Express quickly wrapped up another service game before the focus again turned to Murray. The Scot was not troubled too much as he won the game to 15.

The pressure was then on the former world number one as he trailed 15-40 to Murray – failing twice to outwit the Scot with drop shots.

However, he reeled off four points in a row to escape the game and lead 3-2.

Finding a service rhythm

Both men were starting to find their serving radars as the next two games went comfortably to the man tossing the balls.

Murray hit his fifth ace of the match and had Federer in real trouble with well directed serves to level it up at 4-4.

The Swiss needed to call upon every ounce of his experience and guile as he ran Murray around the court to save break point on two occasions and take a 5-4 lead.

Murray’s serve was unfettered in the tenth game of the set as he made it 5-5 and while Federer was struggling to land a lot of first serves, he made it to 40-30 before a fortuitous net cord gave the Scot a glimmer of hope. A netted return got Federer out of jail and meant Murray needed to hold serve to force a tie-break.

The game that matters

An ace and a solid forehand put Murray 30-0 up but Federer clawed back to make it 30-30 and forced a set point after an enthralling passage of play.

A wayward Murray backhand was drifting out but Federer chose to play the shot, dropping it just over the net. Murray scampered to lob it over his head but the ball dropped just out to give him set point.

Blows were exchanged from the back of the court before Federer advanced and hit a deft slice to clinch the second set.
