Sligo hold off stern challenge in Wicklow to advance in qualifiers

The hosts in Aughrim never managed to take a lead, but looked to have momentum after drawing level with six minutes remaining.

Sligo 0 – 12

Wicklow  0 – 10

LATE POINTS FROM Brian Curran and Stephen Coen saw Sligo edge a tight contest and knock Wicklow out of the Senior Football Championship qualifiers in Aughrim.

The hosts recovered from a slow start that saw them slip to an early four-point deficit, but they never led in a game that provided just eight points in the second half.

Points from Sean Furlong helped to keep the scoreboard ticking for Wicklow, but the Connacht men had six scorers helping them to a 0 – 8 to 0 -6 lead at half-time.

James Stafford claimed his first score of the game after half-time and Furlong added another to his tally as Wicklow slowly grappled to level pegging.

They reached that point with six minutes remaining: 10 points apiece and both sides fearing the end of their summer football.

It was Sligo who held firm. Coen striking his score with two minutes on the clock and Curran calmly fisting over his side’s 12th point to leave the home side needing a goal that this game rarely looked like providing.

Scorers to follow.
