Confirmed: Whelan and St Ledger will miss upcoming qualifiers

Problems are mounting for Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni ahead of this Friday’s clash with Germany.

THE FAI HAVE this evening confirmed that Glenn Whelan and Sean St Ledger will miss Ireland’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers with Germany and the Faroe Islands.

Whelan picked up a hamstring injury during Stoke’s game with Liverpool at the weekend, and following scans on the injury this morning, he has been ruled out of the games.

Meanwhile, Sean St Ledger will also definitely miss the games as expected, after he picked up a hamstring injury during Leicester’s win over Bristol City this weekend, with Aston Villa’s Ciaran Clark drafted in to replace him.

Shortly after the news was announced, St Ledger tweeted: “out for a minimum four weeks gutted to be missing the qualifiers but the aviva gonna be some atmosphere on Friday night!”

The injuries will come as a further blow to Giovanni Trapattoni’s side ahead of the critical upcoming fixtures, with James McClean already having been ruled out earlier today.

The side has been beset by problems of late, with other key internationals, including Kevin Doyle and Richard Dunne, currently unavailable for selection.

Sad to say but we need more injuries IMO to give a chance to some players who should be first choice anyways

Hardly worth sweating over the injured players. They’re not being replaced by any worse players. I mean, Paul Greene and McShane haven’t been called up, have they?!

    Or have they????

Great news. No one wants to watch Whelan boot the ball away 15 times every game.

Just a pity about St Ledger, Doyle and McClean. Hope Clark gets a chance. It’ll be interesting to see who plays in midfield. I like Simon Cox but if I see him on the wing again I’ll go nuts…
