A RECENTLY-CONDUCTED survey has revealed that Irish supporters travelling to Poland in the coming weeks are digging deep into their pockets.
Several thousand fans have booked to follow Giovanni Trapattoni’s men to Poznan and Gdansk and, according to the figures given in a study done by Continental Tyres and You Boys in Green, high unemployment rates and the poor health of the economy has not deterred many.
Of the 355 fans surveyed, one-quarter (24%) plan to splash out between €3,000 and €4,000 on travel expenses, accommodation, match tickets, food and drink during June, while the remaining 76% will spend up to €2,000 for the experience.
Unsurprisingly, the vast majority (85%) have chosen to bypass travel agents and instead made their own travel arrangement online. 10% of the overall number have opted to do a ‘Joxer’ and travel by van with a further 3% taking the car across Europe and into Poland.

Sealing tickets for Ireland’s three Group C games with Croatia, Spain and Italy has proven difficult for some 18% of those questioned and, in terms of the length of their stay, 85% have put commitments at home to one side and will stick around for all three group matches at least.
People need to live their lives as well David. Just because FG want all our money, doesn’t mean we can’t splash out once in a while. More arrogance from FG. I can’t wait til this Government collapses!
Can’t afford it but I’m still going to Poland. These things don’t come around too often. Have to make the most of them when they do.
Cone on you boys in green, roll on Poznan.
David your life must be like an episode of Eastenders! Anyways I’m gonna be down in Achill and I’m gonna find a pub to watch it. Beers, bbq and the boyd in green! Woohoo! Remember Dave you are not here for a long time but a good time! Now its Friday I order you all to enjoy yourselves and grab the weekend by the wibbly wobbly wonder!xxxxc
I presume all travelling to Poland have full time jobs and are taking holidays. Those with no jobs I presume some body will collect their dole for them
I am going but again it is at a real stretch. Thing is, who knows how long it will be before this happens again and even if it does, this one feels special. Its been too long and the situation back home has given people an extra incentive to have a good time. This could be generation defining. A great moment in our lives.
not goin to get into the argument about people claiming their dole while over there but didn’t you just answer your own question??? take two weeks holiday still get paid…. think you must be a pretty mean spirited person if your gonna begrudge anyone the trip of a lifetime if they can afford it….wish i was goin… just gonna have to cheer on the lads from home!!!
Not sure if this was directed at my post but I was actually defending those on social welfare who are entitled to take holidays, I certainly would not begrudge anyone from taking the trip albeit I fear it will be a waste of money, I do stand by my comment re how anyone on social welfare could afford such a trip, unless that is if your living at home, don’t have a mortgage, family to feed etc etc, i reckon a basic package holiday would be a struggle let alone all that is involved attending matches abroad.
I’ll be going, pasta cooked in the hostels for the week and supermarket beer! Can be done without having to overly splash out. Also flights and accommodation have been payed for well in advance.
Hang on minute, was it not reported that the numbers travelling are pretty dismal with a lot of tickets unsold? As for people on the dole having someone collect it for them (absolute nonsense and impossible) it should however be stated, people on the dole are entitled to take two weeks holidays and have their payments suspended during approved holiday time, this said, how anyone on the dole could afford such a trip is beyond me.
Guess people just don’t get the concept of prioritising expenditure. Splash out on something that can be done from home and then complain about inability to pay the mortgage. Well nobody understands the value of a feee lunch.
thats my flag. i had a job..when i bought and payed for everything with and after the euros. left my job today.. anyone thats going on about the house hold charge, the refarendam yes or no. ..shut up. its just for bannter. if you dont like go away. if you do. support the irish on this tour cause they need it

Christ and how many are the types refusing to pay the household charge!
I’d rather spend money on enjoying myself rather than give it to more taxes and to fund bank debt ..
In case you missed the point many refused to pay in principle, rather than of their lack of ability to do so.
And frankly euro 2012 will do more for Ireland than a household charge
Is Christ refusing to pay now too?
People need to live their lives as well David. Just because FG want all our money, doesn’t mean we can’t splash out once in a while. More arrogance from FG. I can’t wait til this Government collapses!
They obviously rather not waste their money Higgins

Entitled. Now there’s a word that shouldn’t be in the same sentence as dole. Entitled to take two weeks holidays from what? Doing f*ck all?
I’ll be going, pasta cooked in the hostels for the week and supermarket beer! Can be done without having to overly splash out. Also flights and accommodation have been payed for well in advance.
Good for you Shanners!! If I’d a few extra bob I’d be there, trip of a lifetime!

I’m going for the 1st match. Thanks to my beautiful, fantastic wife for a guilt free pass.
Guess people just don’t get the concept of prioritising expenditure. Splash out on something that can be done from home and then complain about inability to pay the mortgage. Well nobody understands the value of a feee lunch.
The longer these condescending comments are made every time someone so much as dares to spend money, the longer this recession will go on for.
