What recession? One in four going to Euros will shell out over €3,000

The results of a survey suggest the credit unions and piggy banks are being hit hard ahead of next week’s tournament.

A RECENTLY-CONDUCTED survey has revealed that Irish supporters travelling to Poland in the coming weeks are digging deep into their pockets.

Several thousand fans have booked to follow Giovanni Trapattoni’s men to Poznan and Gdansk and, according to the figures given in a study done by Continental Tyres and You Boys in Green, high unemployment rates and the poor health of the economy has not deterred many.

Of the 355 fans surveyed, one-quarter (24%)  plan to splash out between €3,000 and €4,000 on travel expenses, accommodation, match tickets, food and drink during June, while the remaining 76% will spend up to €2,000 for the experience.

Unsurprisingly, the vast majority (85%)  have chosen to bypass travel agents and instead made their own travel arrangement online. 10% of the overall number have opted to do a ‘Joxer’ and travel by van with a further 3% taking the car across Europe and into Poland.

Sealing tickets for Ireland’s three Group C games with Croatia, Spain and Italy has proven difficult for some 18% of those questioned and, in terms of the length of their stay, 85% have put commitments at home to one side and will stick around for all three group matches at least.

I’d rather spend money on enjoying myself rather than give it to more taxes and to fund bank debt ..

In case you missed the point many refused to pay in principle, rather than of their lack of ability to do so.

And frankly euro 2012 will do more for Ireland than a household charge

People need to live their lives as well David. Just because FG want all our money, doesn’t mean we can’t splash out once in a while. More arrogance from FG. I can’t wait til this Government collapses!

I am going but again it is at a real stretch. Thing is, who knows how long it will be before this happens again and even if it does, this one feels special. Its been too long and the situation back home has given people an extra incentive to have a good time. This could be generation defining. A great moment in our lives.

p.s. David Higgins your’e not invited

Not sure if this was directed at my post but I was actually defending those on social welfare who are entitled to take holidays, I certainly would not begrudge anyone from taking the trip albeit I fear it will be a waste of money, I do stand by my comment re how anyone on social welfare could afford such a trip, unless that is if your living at home, don’t have a mortgage, family to feed etc etc, i reckon a basic package holiday would be a struggle let alone all that is involved attending matches abroad.

Hang on minute, was it not reported that the numbers travelling are pretty dismal with a lot of tickets unsold? As for people on the dole having someone collect it for them (absolute nonsense and impossible) it should however be stated, people on the dole are entitled to take two weeks holidays and have their payments suspended during approved holiday time, this said, how anyone on the dole could afford such a trip is beyond me.

Guess people just don’t get the concept of prioritising expenditure. Splash out on something that can be done from home and then complain about inability to pay the mortgage. Well nobody understands the value of a feee lunch.
