AFTER AN OFF-SEASON full of legalese and prolonged negotiations, the NFL couldn’t have asked for a better opening night to put people’s minds back on the football.
A last-gasp goal line stop by the Green Bay Packers defence ensured that the Super Bowl champions got off to a winning start, clinging on for a 42-34 victory against the New Orleans Saints.
In a game crammed with action and incident, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns, proving that he might just be the man to lead the Wisconsin franchise to back-to-back Super Bowl crowns in Indianapolis next February.
Not to be outdone, Drew Brees threw for over 100 yards more — 419 to be precise — and three TDs of his own, including a late pass to tight end Jimmy Graham to cut the deficit to eight points with just over two minutes remaining.
Sounds like a decent game, doesn’t it? And that’s before we even think about mentioning Packers rookie Randall Cobb who returned a kickoff 108 yards to score on his first NFL start.
Or Darren Sproles who had a 72-yard punt return touchdown for the Saints in the first half.
