Wexford finally beat Clare after more extra-time drama

It only took 180 minutes to separate the two sides.

Wexford 2-25

Clare 2-22

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS CLARE are out of this year’s competition after Wexford finally overcame Davy Fitzgerald’s men in extra-time of their All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship replay in Wexford Park this evening.

The visitors played much of the second half with 13 men following the sending off of Brendan Bulger just before the break for striking an opponent and Jack Browne on 46 minutes for a second bookable offence.

A goal by Harry Keogh in the first half of extra time, followed by three Jack Guiney scores at the death, proved the difference between the two sides as Liam Dunne’s men finally got the win after throwing away so many opportunities over the two games.

The win comes despite 12 first half wides from Wexford and a Darach Honan goal for Clare which ensured his side led by as many as five points midway through the opening period.

However the gap was down to two points at the break thanks to a Lee Chin point from a seemingly impossible angle; Clare 1-5 Wexford 0-6.

Clare responded to their second red card with a second goal through John Conlan but that maximum was cancelled out immediately as Conor McDonald raised a green flag of his own before Liam Óg McGovern put Wexford ahead of the first time.

Like the drawn game, it looked as if Wexford would win in normal time but a late Colin Ryan 65 – four minutes into stoppage time – ensured we were once again going to extra-time.

With Clare back to 15, they raced into a two point lead through Conor McGrath and Jamie Shanahan before Keogh struck his goal.

The two sides exchanged points after half-time but as the clock ticked down, Jack Guiney (0-10) reeled off three scores to see his side home at last.
