Dessie Dolan the main man as Garrycastle win their seventh Westmeath title

The 35-year-old was at his best as they defeated Mullingar Shamrocks on a scoreline of 1-11 to 0-8.

DESSIE DOLAN ROLLED back the years to help Garrycastle win their seventh Westmeath SFC crown with his father Dessie Snr as manager.

The 2011 Leinster champions defeated Mullingar Shamrocks by 1-11 to 0-8 for their first title in three years and 35-year-old Dolan Jnr was immense in spearheading their victory.

Alex Gardiner’s goal inside the opening ten minutes gave the Athlone club a four point advantage in a disappointing first period. Garrycastle led by 1-3 to 0-3 at the interval, having played against the breeze.

Ciaran Curley and Lorcan Smyth pointed after the break, but Dolan and Michael Monaghan responded to maintain Garrycastle’s three point advantage at the midway point of the second half.

Dolan tagged on another couple of scores to seal the six point winning margin, and Garrycastle’s path back to the Leinster championship once again.
