West Brom accept Hull's offer for Long

The Tipperary man has been given permission to speak to the Tigers ahead of a possible move.

WEST BROM HAVE given Shane Long permission to speak to Hull after accepting an undisclosed offer from the Premier League club.

The Ireland striker, whose current deal is up in the summer (although there is a year’s option in the club’s favour), has been subject of much speculation this month but will now join the Tigers if he can agree personal terms — having just missed out on a move last summer.

Speaking to the club’s website, Baggies sporting & technical director Richard Garlick said: “We began talking to Shane about a new contract last spring and, during the ongoing negotiations, we made him two offers which would have significantly increased his salary.

“However, despite our best endeavours, Shane has declined to sign a new contract.

Shane effectively only has 18 months left on his deal and with him no closer to accepting our terms and then Hull making an acceptable offer, we felt it was in the club’s best interests to accept the bid.”

If a deal is struck for Long, he will join Nikica Jelavic as the second striker signed by Hull this month. The Croatian arrived from Everton yesterday for a fee believed to be around £6m.

Doyle like Long will work his socks off and score very few,6 million for a man with 7 league goals in two seasons, its nearly as dumb as the 6 million we gave Everton for that waster Anichebe,
Robbie keane must be worth 15 million cos he is three times the player Long is,at club and international level

Poor move for him thought Everton might have sneaked a bid in for him they could do worse than have him on the bench at least..

But playing with better players would make him a better player and its not as if Everton are blessed with strikers so he would have got a fair bit of game time..

Not good enough to play for Everton. His level is at a relegation threatened premiership side or a promotion chasing championship side, like the majority of the Ireland squad unfortunately. Might score 3 or 4 goals for hull between now and seasons end.

Why would a team hoping to get champions league football next year want to sign Shane Long? Like most Irish fans I really like Long but I’m not that blinded to think he’s that good.

Long needs a run of games which he wasn’t getting at west brom. They were constantly rotating there strikers.
Let’s hope he can hit some form and feeding off Robbie Brady can only be a be a good thing for Ireland.
Granted he is not the most prolific of strikers but he is still capable of contributing with goals and his display against Villa was excellent.

Long was pretty good a few years ago but went downhill very quickly, even more so than Doyle. We’re really badly off for strikers – what the hell is going to happen when Robbie Keane retires ?

Thought Mrs Long was set against this move – happy at WBA, etc, going nowhere, & so on. Obviously Shane is his own man
