Rousing late comeback sees Waterford advance past Clare in Munster minors

The Banner were leading the quarter-final tie heading into the closing stage at Cusack Park.

Waterford 1-13

Clare 0-11

A ROUSING LATE recovery ensured that Waterford made a successful first defence of their All-Ireland minor title this evening in Cusack Park, Ennis.

In front of an attendance of 1,405, the home side appeared set for a first championship victory since 2012 when holding an 0-11 to 0-08 advantage entering the final quarter.

However, despite being on top, Clare simply never put the game to bed, with a plethora of wides and misplaced passes allowing Waterford to stay in the contest. And gathering momentum, they would hit 1-4 without reply in the final seven minutes to secure a semi-final spot, as substitute Eddie Meaney scored 1-1 of that tally.

All that after the sides were level on four occasions in the opening quarter before wind-assisted Clare pulled clear with three unanswered points through Aron Shanagher (2) and Michael O’Shea. However, with Patrick Curran keeping the visitors in touch through frees, Waterford would only trail by two at the break at 0-7 to 0-5, with the wind to come.

The visitors gained parity once more only two minutes into the new half but it only seemed to motivate the hosts further, with a brace each from Shanagher and Ian Galvin helping Clare to a three-point lead.

Waterford’s meteoric fightback would stun the home team though as Meaney’s 58th minute goal stemmed from a defensive error that allowed the replacement to kick the ball over the line and maintain their hold over the Banner county for the third successive year.
