Suarez refuses to shake Evra’s hand, as Fergie urges Liverpool to ‘get rid of him’

Despite both clubs’ managers previously playing down their rift, the bad blood between both sides appears far from over.

IF YOU THOUGHT you’d heard the end of the Luis Suarez-Patrice Evra racism debate, think again.

The Uruguayan refused to shake Evra’s hand before kick-off in today’s game between Liverpool and Man United, in an incident that exacerbated the obvious tension between the two players in recent months.

In addition, there was more controversy still as Suarez kicked the ball away in anger just as the half-time whistle had blown, prompting a number of players to become embroiled in a heated argument.

And the problems spilled over into the tunnel, with The Telegraph’s Henry Winter tweeting: “Problems in OT tunnel. Pushing and shoving between #lfc and #mufc players. Police and stewards involved.”

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish previously insisted that Suarez would shake Evra’s hand.

And in a post-match interview, when Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves suggested Suarez’s snub set the tone for the game, Dalglish quipped:

“You’re bang out of order for blaming Suarez for anything that happened today.”

He then added:

“I never knew he didn’t [shake his hand]. I’ll take your word for it… We’ll ask him and take it from there.”

Meanwhile, his counterpart Alex Ferguson launched an attack on Suarez after after the game, saying: “I’d get rid of him if I was them” and branding him a “disgrace to Liverpool FC”.

And asked on whether it was appropriate for Evra to celebrate in front of Suarez after the game, Ferguson replied:

“I didn’t see it but if he did, well he didn’t need to do that”

The Uruguayan had also gotten his name on the score-sheet during the game, however it was not enough to prevent his side losing 2-1, allowing United to go one point ahead of Man City at the top of the table for the time being.

  • Great for the media. Watch them milk it

  • It’s childish behaviour…..grown men and professional football players…these guys are meant to be role models for kids. Personal issues should be left until after the game. Less of the drama, more of the football please…..

    • Role models? Even the most delinquent of parents knows that footballers are self-absorbed, childish, greedy and brash. Suárez is a great footballer but his behaviour is appalling (biting players in holland, handball on the line in the world cup, using racial slurs, and now refusing to shake hands). He is a disgrace to LFC but given how poor too many of the players are, he’s here to stay. (that said Fergie should keep quiet about who the ‘Pool decide to play).

  • Unitedpeople Ireland, do you even read your own links? The magazines seized were Man united fanzines! Noting to do with Liverpool. Idiot.

  • Barty 11/02/12 #

Some great football played by both sides United were fired up more after that handshake incident. It’s a pity all the talk will be Evra v Suarez the beautiful game has gone very sour.

  • What a bunch of little women.

  • Overpaid prima donnas repeatedly told “you’re the best, you’re heroes”; what else would you expect but those of weaker character to act like big headed 12 year olds…

  • Glad to see Fergie is concerned for Liverpool and informing them of what he would do.

  • Im a Pool fan and could not be more pissed of with Luis. Its Liverpool fc not Squarez fc. Utd were average and attention went on him and not beating an average utd team in old trafford. Dalgish has to take some blame on this too.

    • Aleo 11/02/12 #

Agreed, and I’m a Liverpool fan too. What a stupid, childish gesture to make – not that Evra’s celebration at the end was any better behaviour, but it was Suarez who first inflamed things. If he achieved anything with this, it was probably to spur United on to victory.

  • One rule for JT and another for the rest of the Premier League…

  • I think the point is that by shaking hands, Suarez could have defused the situation but he chose not to which exacerbated it. A poor choice and shows the nature of this man’s character!

  • That mask was in RedIssue,a United fanzine, not a liverpool one. Not surprising GMP seized it really.

  • I think you’ll find that was the mancs that had those!… Check your facts, and NO the Daily Mail is NOT the facts!

  • Wish he had shaken his hand as a let’s move on gesture.
The whole ugly episode was just about to fade away.
    He’s just made it worse.

  • The daily rags are gonna get mileage outta this. No big deal about Terry and Ferdinand, so why make a big deal about this? That said, if Suarez truly feels he’s innocent, why would he shake the hand of his accuser. Will they focus on Evra’s challenge early on where he tried to break up Suarez, but ended up nearly crippling Rio?

    • The kop 11/02/12 #

don’t forget about terry and bridge……no handshake there either…. and could you blame bridge! just take this having to handshake rubbish away and let players shake hands at the end if they want…

  • Just wondering if (big if) John Terry is cleared of racial abuse will the general public lay off him. After all what else did he do, eh shagged some ones bird, Thats never been dine before no. Good aul George Best was shaggin anything that moved and jumped queues for a replacement liver which he wasted and yet he’s still idolised??? The populists alive and well.

  • Suarez is an idiot!! Why would you act like that? Small minded, selfish & ignorant. What a cretin!!

  • I don’t think he should have to shake hands if he doesn’t want to.

  • Suarez is a total scumbag. Shame on susrez and shame on liverpool for accepting and making excuses for this maggot.

  • Just proves Evra is the bigger man offering his hand in the first place , Suarez is trouble although talented but Liverpool should offload him now . He got a 7 match ban in holland for biting a player . Obviously a screw loose

  • It’s a feel world so why should he shake the hand if he did not want to… There is no law against it, and I am neither a LFC or MUFC fan.

    • SeanS 11/02/12 #

There may be no law against it but he had the chance to put the whole situation to bed today and all he did was make it worse for nothing other than his own selfish reasons. All he did was exacerbate an already tense situation, not just between himself and evra, but between the two clubs themselves, their players, and their fans.

  • What a wanker he was the first to play mind games with other ppl any way what the hell is going on with football it getting a joke getting paid thousands and complaining about everything it’s killing the game

  • And not one comment about the disgraceful behaviour by Evra at the end!… Also if anyone chooses to analyse the footage, which I’m sure Sky will have experts doing as we speak, Evra dropped his hand when he saw Luis, so he moved along then Rio threw his 2 pennyworth in!…. Both players should be put in a room With their managers and they need their heads banging together…..It’s all getting out of hand and this particular game will grow in hatred until unfortunately something tragic happens. The situation needs to be defused, end of.

  • Ciaro 11/02/12 #

Luis Suarez, you know what you are

  • Rio didn’t shake his hand so is he the same.

    • But Rio is English and that doesn’t make headlines!

    • the only winners in this whole load of shite are sky sports news…god there will be no end to the amount of times it will be shown over the next week…..
maybe a bit of hindsight on the FA’s behalf and there would have been no issues today…
having to handshake before match is a bit of a farce anyhow… in the real world if you don’t like someone….. would you shake hands with them!!?? I Think Not……
btw… ferdinand and welbeck did not shake hands with suarez either…..

  • What’s the big deal there,English fa have different rules when
It comes to John terry,he hadn’t got to shake Anton ferdinands hand, all done with their approval

  • a despicable human being who racially abuses, bites and kicks his opponents, a true credit to the long since venerable name of liverpool football club

  • Suarez is just pure ungentlemanly scumbag material.
He’s doing the team club no favours.

  • Why should he shake the hand that points the finger of lies and holds a poker hand of black race cards to use when he can’t get his own way.

    • Ciaro 11/02/12 #

All that “Suarez is a hero” crap that dalglish and Liverpool have indulged in will destroy their season.
The club has no money, an ageing ground that’s too small and owners who won’t invest. They need to focus on these issues, not a thug like Suarez who’s an average football with a poor disciplinary record.

    • ciaro..you talking nonsense..new owners with cash to spend..stanley park ground back on track..and minimal debt unlike man utds 750 000 000 debt.

  • Ferdinand also refused to shake Suarez’ hand.
If the FA want to punish Suarez for this, then they should equally punish Ferdinand.

  • If Suarez was really a racist then why did he shake the hand of the last Man Utd player in the line up?

  • Half a man that chap

  • Shut up Fergie who gives a f… What you think.

He doesn’t want to shake hands, it’s his choice. He believes he did nothing wrong.

What Evra did was worse, trying to humiliate him an Incite the man united fans. He could have started a riot.

  • All bs! Both clubs and managers had repeatedly said that the matter was over before the game. That does not mean to say the two players need to shake hands. Suarez was wrong in what he did and paid the price of a eight game ban – end of.
It doesn’t mean he has to shake anyone’s hand afterwards, does it? Ferguson is joking when he says Liverpool should get rid of Suarez, for what exactly? Not shaking hands or for racist remarks? I’m pretty sure that before the game Ferguson said the matter was over. So why bring it up again?
As for Fergusons moral compass, where does he stand when it comes to giving pay rises to his players who then repeatedly spend the cash on prostitutes? We know Man Utds position on racism, but where do they stand when it comes to their rich football stars, married with children, exploiting women for sex?

  • jrbmc 11/02/12 #

MOTD will be interesting tonight! Hope Hansen and Lawro are on two decent ex pool players , who new the difference between right and wrong . Suarez is a scumbag plain and simple and I guarantee there are players at Liverpool that know what he said to Evra was so wrong and are afraid to speak out in case their dropped or sold.
Keep an eye out for present Liverpool players who decide to in the future to do the life story book. Truth may well come out then what they really think of him

  • Football is such a pathetic game

  • Too far, no need for that.

  • LFC & Daglishs mentality is awful,an absolute disgrace to everything the club has in its history. Shankly would be ashamed of Suarez & Kennys (& John Henrys silence) actions. This is 2012,not 1812. The race issue isnt gone & it wont be going away while Suarez & Co keep up this ‘seige’ and the ‘whole world against LFC’ mentality. As always, its never their fault, anything, ever.

  • Nearly as laughable as all the united and liverpool supporters who aint from manchester or liverpool

  • jrbmc 11/02/12 #

Get a life man? You think that only happens at OT ???? Another one for you George that makes a stupid comment ! He should go have a biscuit too
