Watch: Luke Fitzgerald admits 'there is scope' for leaving Leinster

The Leinster back is not taking an active role in negotiating his new IRFU contract, but he is not afraid to move abroad if the necessity should arise.

THE RUGBY EQUIVALENT of the transfer window is in full flow with deals getting done left right and centre.

Luke Fitzgerald can play all those positions, so naturally he’s a man angling for a new deal.

Following his peak in a 2009, Fitzgerald’s stock has hit a marked decline due to injury and loss of form.

Speaking to Paul Kimmage on Setanta’s I-Talk Sport, The Blackrock boy did not refute the suggestion that there were offers on the table from abroad and even volunteered ‘a little’ French as proof.

“I’m actually in the middle of all that (contract negotiations) at the minute at the moment, but I leave that stuff up to my agent (Fintan Drury) -he would be very adamant on keeping me separate from that.”

“Obviously, I absolutely love Leinster and love Ireland and all my family are here and everything like that.

“There’s always scope for (a move elsewhere) and I think at some stage it would be a great experience. Not just for me, rugby-wise. But for me, personally, to test myself in a different environment,”

“It’s all up in the air at the moment. I’m trying to stay apart from that until the final decisions have to be made.”

In the same interview, the Leinster utility back spoke about his difficult time with injury, most recently a frustrating spell with a neck injury. His attitude to recovery has changed thanks to the experience he has earned.

“It has been a bit of a setback. I think was in a very good place before I was injured and you want to get back playing that sort of rugby.”

“Whilst last year was a tough period, there was a similar time period I was out. The learning curve from that I would hope would help me this year.”

“I can feel in training now at the moment – I’m saying ‘ Jeez now, let’s not let this happen again,”
