Vodafone drop Dublin sponsorship for charity

The shirt sponsor will cede their promotional rights to mental health charity Suicide or Survive for Dublin’s league openers.

DUBLIN GAA AND its current shirt sponsor, telecoms provider Vodafone, have made public plans to open the county’s 2012 league campaigns with a unique charitable initiative.

Instead of wearing jerseys emblazoned with the Vodafone logo during the county’s curtain-raising matches with Kerry and Galway in the football and hurling leagues, Dublin’s teams will take to the field in kits bearing the emblem of mental health charity Suicide or Survive (SOS).

It is hoped that the campaign will both raise awareness of mental health issues and go some way towards tackling the stigma surrounding depression and suicide.

John Costello, CEO of Dublin GAA, explained his organisation’s decision to embrace the proposal:

“We didn’t have to think twice when Vodafone came to us with the idea of swapping their logo for that of the Suicide or Survive Charity for these games.  With one in four people experiencing mental health problems at some stage in their lives, it is essential that organisations like Dublin GAA and the GAA get behind efforts to encourage people to talk and look for the help that’s out there.”

The bespoke jerseys will make their debut in Dublin’s highly anticipated Croke Park Spring Series clash with Kerry on February 4th, before receiving a second outing during the hurling team’s season-opener with Galway on February 26th.
