VIDEO: Lionel Messi breaks Müller record with another hat-trick

While he was at it, Messi also surpassed a record set by Pelé. You know, just for the craic.

THE RECORD FOR most goals in season has stood for 39 years. It was set by German great, Gerd Müller, who netted 67 times for Bayern Munich in th 1972-73 season.

Last night, Lionel Messi eclipsed that watermark, a hat-trick propelling him from 65 to 68.

His first two goals of the night came from the penalty spot, clearly he has exorcised the demons of Chelsea. Those two goals pushed him past the single-season exploits of a certain Pele, with Santos in 1958, and Ferenc Deak with the great post-war Ferencvaros side.

It was this goal, however, that made him immortal.
