Victorious Quade Cooper wants to return to boxing this year

“I had so much fun, I can’t explain the feeling. It was such a buzz.”

WALLABIES PLAYMAKER QUADE COOPER loved his first taste of professional boxing and wants another bout in the ring later this year.

Cooper, 24, spectacularly won his first professional fight with a first round knockout of fellow Australian Barry Dunnett on the undercard of former World Cup-winning All Black Sonny Bill Williams’s heavyweight title fight in Brisbane on Friday night.

An enthusiastic Cooper said he wanted another fight sooner rather than later and foreshadowed a possible return to the ring after his rugby commitments were finished with the Wallabies and Queensland Reds later this year.

“Once I go into the ring there’s all the lights, all the cameras — that’s where I want to be,” Cooper told reporters.

“I said to my guys afterwards I didn’t want to get out of the ring.

“I would love to have another one later on this year although I have a big year of rugby.

“So I will just continue to train so when the window of opportunity arrives in December or something like that I will be fighting fit.”

Cooper took a couple of blows early from Dunnett before bouncing back to hurt his opponent with a powerful combination, sealing the fight within three minutes.

“I had so much fun, I can’t explain the feeling. It was such a buzz,” Cooper said.

“I am not going to lie but I was doubting whether my skill and athleticism was going to be enough.

“But once you get in there you’ve just got to trust your ability.”

The only downside for Cooper was that his Queensland Reds teammates had missed out on his boxing debut as they were playing in their final pre-season trial against defending Super 15 champions Waikato Chiefs at the same time as his fight.

Williams scored an unanimous points heavyweight victory over veteran South African Frans Botha in the main event of the night.

  • He was fighting a nothing boxer!, a fulltime car crash assessor/part time boxer. whoever he fights next (probably the local butcher or shopkeeper) his physique and speed will get him by, but whenever he meets an opponent who can box and is anywhere near his prime, Quade’s gonna get hurt! personally I think it’ll b fun to watch! as for Sonny Bill he has a little bit more ability than Quade but will be made a show of at some stage too!

Cooper’s quick, and he has a fast jab… but very little boxing savvy. He holds his head up like he’s peering over a fence, and drops his hands like he’s trying to tie his shoes. The guy he fought was a local journeyman at best with some Muay Thai fights and a body built at his desk job, and he tagged Cooper. If he fights someone with a little bit of training who’s in some kind of shape, he’ll be staring at lights for all the wrong reasons.

SBW looked miles better than his last time out, which admittedly is not a high hurdle to make, but he’s really improved. He also showed how green he still is, and Botha was able to bully both him and the ref into bad positions he took advantage of — constant double-punches to the back of SBW’s head, standing on SBW’s feet when the ref would break them up and push/punch, punching on the break OVER the ref — one of which knocked SBW silly and another which nearly ended the fight. SBW showed he can take some damage, he has some real heart, he’s fast and hits hard (he marked up Botha in the early rounds), and can stick to a gameplan. Also showed he may stick to rugby.
