Vettel takes another step towards title

The German extended his lead in the drivers’ championship with victory in Monza this afternoon.

SEBASTIAN VETTEL CRUISED to victory at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza this afternoon, leaving him within touching distance of a second successive F1 crown.

The German finished 10 seconds ahead of Jenson Button, with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso rounding out the podium places in third.

The win, Vettel’s eighth of the season, gives him an almost unassailable lead of 112 points over Alonso with just six races remaining in the drivers’ championship.

If other placings go his way, a win in Singapore in two weeks’ time could guarantee that the 24-year-old retains his title.

At the winner’s press conference, an emotional Vettel conceded that Monza will always have a special place in his heart. The famous Italian circuit was the site of his first ever F1 victory, for Toro Rosso in 2008.

“This circuit is very special, and when I crossed the line I remembered every single bit of my last win and the podium is incredible.

A great race for us, a very special win. Last time the Italian people were cheering a bit more, but it was still very special for me to be in that place again.
