THE GAA HAS the support of a “vast majority” of counties as it prepares to crack down on managers who are pocketing lucrative expenses payments.
Coiste Bainistí, the Association’s management committee, met on Friday night to consider the counties’ written responses to a discussion document on how best to tackle the under-the-table cash cow.
An estimated €15m in expenses changes hands between clubs, counties and managers every year, a practice described by GAA President Christy Cooney as “a cancer running through our organisation”.
A statement issued by the GAA this morning said that option 2, which proposes a stricter implementation of the Association’s existing rules on expenses, is supported by most counties.
The next step is for the GAA to liaise with external experts to draw up procedures and actions which will allow them to enforce the rules. A report will then be presented to Coiste Bainistí for its approval.
Last week, Cooney said that he hoped to have concrete proposals ready in time for the Association’s annual Congress, which meets next month.
