JOOST VAN DER Westhuzien is among the all-time greats of world rugby, and it has been heart-breaking to watch him battling motor neuron disease since 2011.

The 43-year-old has been inspirational in his attitude, however, and has worked hard to raise awareness of the disease and its crippling effects. The ex-scrumhalf recently undertook the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise funds for motor neuron disease research.

Before Saturday’s Rugby Championship clash between South Africa and New Zealand, the legend took to the Ellis Park turf alongside several current Springboks, receiving a wonderful standing ovation as he did so.

South Africa went on to claim a 27-25 victory after an excellent game, no doubt partly inspired by van der Westhuizen.
