UNIVERSITY OF ULSTER Jordanstown and NUI Galway won today’s clashes in the Sigerson Cup while last year’s finalists UCC saw their game with Trinity College postponed.

Jordanstown were 1-15 to 0-11 victors over IT Sligo in their first round clash at their home grounds in Belfast.

IT Sligo made the early running to lead by 0-8 to 0-6 at the break with Mayo’s Evan Regan in superb scoring form.

But Jordanstown recovered in the second-half to take control of the game. Their star-studded team which included Armagh’s Jamie Clarke, Tyrone’s Mattie Donnelly and Cavan’s Killian Clarke eventually ran out seven-point winners.

Their goal came from Tyrone’s Conor McAliskey after he was picked out with a perceptive pass from Monaghan’s Kieran Hughes.

Meanwhile in Tralee, NUI Galway enjoyed a rewarding trip to Kerry as they defeated IT Tralee by 0-15 to 0-10. Extra-time was required to secure success after the teams had been tied at 0-8 apiece at the end of normal time. NUI Galway will now travel to Dublin to face DCU next week.

The final game that was scheduled for today was between UCC and Trinity College but it fell foul of the weather. The original venue of Clanna Gael in Ringsend was deemed unplayable this morning.

After the game was switched to Trinity College’s grounds in Santry, that pitch was ruled unplayable just before throw-in. The game is likely to be refixed for next week.
