LIONEL MESSI WAS at his brilliant best again last night, scoring four as Barcelona came from behind to rout Valencia 5-1 at the Camp Nou.

Real Madrid’s 4-0 win against Racing Santander on Saturday evening opened a 13-point gap over their Catalan rivals at the top of La Liga, and Pep Guardiola’s men looked to be in some danger when Pablo Piatti put the visitors a goal up inside eight minutes.

But Messi turned the game around with two close-range finishes before the half-hour mark and then sealed all three points when he pounced again in the 75th minute.

The little Argentinian added his fourth of the evening — and his 42nd in 40 appearances this season — with a sublime chip in the 84th minute before substitute Xavi rounded off a dominant performance in the final minute.

Barcelona now trail Madrid by 10 points, with Valencia a further 11 points back in third place.
