Match report: Spurs stun United at Old Trafford to leapfrog champions

Tim Sherwood’s good at this management thing.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR HAMMERED another nail into Manchester United’s creaking Premier League title defence with a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day.

Having won their previous six games in all competitions, United were hoping to match wins by their fellow title rivals, but instead they slumped to a sixth defeat of the season that left them 11 points off the pace.

Tottenham, unbeaten in the league under new manager Tim Sherwood, took a 34th-minute lead when Emmanuel Adebayor out-jumped Chris Smalling to head home Christian Eriksen’s right-wing centre.

Eriksen added a second in the 66th minute, smuggling a header past David de Gea from Aaron Lennon’s cross.

Danny Welbeck reduced the arrears immediately from Adnan Januzaj’s incisive pass, but Spurs withstood United’s late onslaught, with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris saving from Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic.

Victory took Spurs above United into sixth place, two points outside the top four, with the defending champions three points further back in seventh.

Everton didn’t do too bad under Moyes, for a club who couldn’t/wouldn’t spend. Of course, the reason he’s at Man U is that he was Ferguson’s anointed one. Don’t be pretending you don’t know that !!!

It’s a fair point he made. Scraped a 1-0 win against Arsenal but got hammered at City, hardly a shot at goal against Chelsea and Liverpool, lost as well to Newcastle, Spurs and Everton.
Record against top sides is brutal. No chance of top 4. Losing Howard Webb has hurt them the most!

Just not good enough from a man united team. Worrying to be relying on an 18 year old to save us. Tom cleverly must be the luckiest man ever to play this long in the centre of midfield for man united. Moyes will be given time but the buying next summer need to be accurate and out of the top drawer.

Most non Man U fans and quite a few of the Man U fans suspected that Moyes was not the right man for the job. He failed to win any trophy at Everton. One could argue his record there was no better than….wait for it….. Alan Curbishley’s record of keeping Charlton in the premiership under his stewardship. And nobody put his name forward. The reason Moyes got the job is exactly the same reason that Alex McLeish got the job at Aston Villa, the influence of Sir Alex. He does support his own. And an equally bad decision. If failure to win anything at Everton is not bad enough, let’s look at the evidence of what has happened since he left; they are playing better football, he went out on a limb to get Fellani when clearly Barkley and Coleman should have been the targets and despite his desire to sign Baines, that player made no effort to agitate for that move. This comment is not made with the benefit of hindsight. I posted strong reservations before the season started and predicted that Moyes would not be in charge for the 2015/16. Maybe that was too generous.
Yes sad but true, Moyes is no Alan Curbishley.

While of course it’s juvenile conjecture to suggest that Utd are dying. What is readily apparent is that Alex Ferguson performed perhaps his best managerial feat in his career, by winning a Premier League with this current Utd midfield… David Moyes in my opinion, has neither the gravitas nor the managerial fortitude to guide a world renowned club such as Utd. With time this contention could prove me incorrect. However as of now, the league table does not lie.

United midfield is rubbish, Evra, Rio and maybe Vidic soon to be gone too. Rooney won’t hang around and Van Persie is too injury prone. Players came to Utd because of Ferguson, they won’t come for Moyes. Look at the job Martinez has done at Everton with the same group of players? Fergie made a hames of his last big Utd decision.

United need a manager who has experience winning leagues and European cups. Moyes doesn’t fit the bill. It’s a bit contradictory to rate players on performance and not managers. If Moyes was a player he wouldn’t be at united. I feel sorry for him, he’s a decent and dedicated manager.

In any case , Man U supporters are only now experiencing some of what most other clubs’ fans have had to endure for years. MU fans had no sympathy for rival supporters when MU were winning all round them; time for them now to feel a bit of pain.
