Uncaged: The UFC heralds Saint Georges Pierre

GSP beat Carlos Condit in one of the toughest fights of his career.

GEORGES ST-PIERRE triumphantly returned to action against Carlos Condit at last weekend’s UFC 154 event and firmly established himself as one of the all-times greats of the sport with a typically dominant display.

In what turned out to be one of the toughest fights of his career, GSP still managed to execute his game-plan perfectly despite being out of action for the previous 18 months.

Johnny Hendricks provided the night’s highlight reel KO blow which served as a stern message to GSP and Dana White over who the Canadian’s next opponent should be while wins for Pablo Garza and Rafael dos Anjos capped a great night of action in Montreal.

Return of the King

Looking at his face in the press conference after the fight, you wouldn’t have thought that Georges St-Pierre had won his fight. He was battered, bruised and despite the appearance of a bespoke suit, he looked exhausted.

In truth, he won the fight in a far easier manner than the condition of his face suggested and while Condit proved more than a worthy opponent for him, he was still no match for the man with the best takedowns in the business.

GSP was forced to prove his mettle in the fight after being downed by a clean head-kick from Condit but he recovered significantly before that round had even ended to regain control of the fight and see out the win. Anderson Silva watched the whole fight from cage-side as he fuelled rumours that he would be next to face GSP in what would arguably be one of the biggest fights in the history of the UFC.

While nothing has been confirmed yet the positive noises emanating from both camps means that the fight holds the very real possibility of turning from fantasy to reality with Dana White reportedly looking to have it sometime in May 2013.

Hendricks wants a shot at the title next

The only person who would not want to see this fight get the go-ahead is Johnny Hendricks. He cemented himself as the welterweight number one contender with a 46 second KO win over Martin Kampmann.

Hendricks firmly staked his claims as a genuine threat in the welterweight division but unfortunately he seems down the pecking order for possible opponents for GSP.

Elsewhere on the card, Francis Carmont picked up a dodgy split decision victory over Tom Lawlor while Mark Hominick continued his fall from grace with another defeat this time against Pablo Garza. Sam Stout suffered a surprising defeat to John Makdessi on the undercard while Ivan Menjivar took home the submission of the night cheque when he beat Azamat Gashimov via arm-bar.

There were also wins for Matt Riddle, Antonio Carvalho and Darren Elkins.
