Ireland fans to receive ‘special award’ from UEFA

The European football governing body’s president Michel Platini plans to travel to Dublin to present the unusual accolade.

IT MAY HAVE been a tournament to forget on the pitch but Ireland’s remarkable support will be recognised by UEFA, it was announced today.

Giovanni Trapattoni’s team were comprehensively beaten in all three of their Group C games and were sent packing as statistically the worst team at Euro 2012.

However, the impeccable behaviour of Irish fans over the eight days was praised from many quarters as they captured the hearts of the Polish people.

“‘The Irish! We will miss you!” was the headline in a Poznan-based newspaper after their elimination, while a German television station paid tribute to the rendition of ‘The Fields of Athenry‘, which rang out around Gdansk’s PGE Arena during the closing minutes of the 4-0 defeat to finalists Spain.

The executive committee has decided to give a special award to the Irish football fans,” Gianni Infantino told a news conference in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, on the eve of the final.

“Everyone was very impressed by the fans of the national team of the Republic of Ireland who came to Poland. The team’s results were mitigated by the fans. (UEFA) president (Michel) Platini will go to Ireland to give the award.”

  • Yes the team were very poor and Delany is a first class clown (his interview with Dion Fanning is a fascinating read) but absolutely fair play to the fans. Plenty of other fans stop singing, supporting and turn nasty when their team don’t perform. We don’t and while I wish our team/manager rewarded the support with results we have no right to begrudge an excellent achievement of being recognised as excellent & gracious supporters.

    • Our fans are no different its just our expectations are so much lower. Remember the fans in Cyprus? They rightfully booed and vented their anger at a dismal performance. I think this ultimately serves the team better than cheering on 3 hammerings in a row.

  • To be fair, no one cares about the award, but the acknowledgment isnt something to be laughed at, like someone said above, theres the tourism aspect, but also this could do wonders in our bid for euro 2020.
But also in general. If such a massive crowd can display that kind of character in a testing situation (ie alcohol and football) then it says something about our culture in general and could benefit us economically.

    • Just what I was thinking. Nice to be in the good books of UEFA while our bid is being considered. Europa league final went well last year and now we know they think well of the Irish people. We may have come away with more from Poland when we realise.

    • Do you seriously believe our fans being in the “good books” with UEFA makes a blind bit of difference to any bid? Some how I don’t think the consideration of fans ranks too highly on their agenda.

    • @Limofax ; Roy didn’t walk on his country, he was sent home. He is most certainly not an embarrassment, he’s the best midfielder this country has ever produced. Everything Roy said was proved correct in the genesis report afterwards. They had no gear, footballs, no proper training pitch. It was an absolute disgrace and he was right as captain to voice his opinion, and he was 100% right in everything he said.

There’s no doubting we have brilliant fans, but to say we are on a par with Italy as regards a successful tournament overall is ludicrous.

Rommel.. I didnt say we were on par with italy.. I said that our off the pitch contribution was very impresive.. And that we contributed as much to the tournament as anybody else. we were a credit to a sport that is plagued with controversy on and off the pitch in regards to fan behaviour and respect… learn how to read, or maybe stop reading tabloid press and learn how to formulate an opinion in a somewhat appropriate manner.

For anyone who wasnt there and has stupid ill informed negative comments you didnt see first hand the joyous attitude we received from every other nationality.

I was amazed personally the amount of other fans who had no issues approaching the irish fans and chatting with them, it was true friendlyness in all its sense. And we sang each other songs, no violence just a good celebration as fellow europeans. We were all on the same level.

I was there when all the irish left and everyone said they wanted the atmosphere back because we brought a beautiful spark to the citys we visited and it was enjoyed by all.

So f all the negative comments here is a sad state that we can be genuinely celebrated by the man on the street in croatia but when you come home you just get gripes and idiotic rubbish thrown at you out of hands by your supposed countrymen.

Secondly, we’re good fans of our national team. Some of us attend LoI regularly and follow it. We live on the doorstep of a global megaleague that is hyped beyond belief. That’s the lot of Irish soccer and no amount of moaning, self-loathing, uppity attitudes from fans of the domestic game or snide sneering from those who never go, will change that fact. I was in Poland and like to think I contributed to this by my own behaviour, and I was wearing Rovers jerseys as were loads of others, plus I saw Cork, Waterford, Bohs, Pats, Derry and Sligo gear over the fortnight. Things may change in the future but none of the crap I’ve read above will help.

Sorry but I think we should be setting the bar a bit higher than mediocrity and a pat on the head for behaving ourselves and getting into the spirit of things.

  • There was a story here the other day about an Australian hostel owned by someone from Dublin, which now refuses entry to Irish people because of their behaviour.

Some people said it was an over-reaction by the owner.
They seem to have been proven right by this award.

There was also the story about some English fans being abused by a gang of Irish fans.
As with the Australian story, this seems to have been an isolated incident.

Those who are looking at this award as something insignificant are overlooking the tourism factor.
Thousands of Irish people singing in unity as their team failed miserably shows that we are a people who do not throw hissy fits in the face of certain defeat. We just look forward to the next tournament and hope for better.
It also shows that we are not a nation filled with aggressive soccer hooligans (we save that for GAA matches).

The reputation of the Irish as a welcoming and happy people has really been strengthened by the behaviour of the fans. Yes, there are some jackasses in Ireland, but unless you live in a conservative American style bubble in which no other country or race exists on the planet, you should be aware that every single country and race on the planet has its fair share of jackasses.

The Irish fans who travelled to this tournament have proven that the Irish people (for the most part) are not whiny and aggressive little bitches, and that’s why we won this award.

    Reply
    • Or you’re still whining because you know everything there is to know about soccer, and you believe that you should have been the goalie, centre back, midfielder, striker and manager, and you would have single handedly won the tournament.
In which case I bow to your superiority, and look forward to you winning the next World Cup for Ireland from behind your computer.

We make national institutions out of joke popstars after they make a run at singing contests over in the ‘big time’ of London. It’s in our character to crave approval when in fact it is a sign of our insecurity.

Roy’s right we should demand more of ourselves and be the best we can be, not go looking for the ‘also ran’ award. It’s like in Meet the Fockers where his parents made him up an 8th place award for finishing 8th in a race of 8.

I’m glad the Irish are so affable I really do but this was a football contest. (never mind what basing our Identity around this kind of stuff does to our drinking habits and rate of alcoholism)

16th out of 16!!! & the joint worst record ever at the euros

All I want to come of this is for us to actually bring some of our young talented players into the squad and to develop a tactical plan B.

oh and I was stood at Bray vs Cork last nigh with the sun in my eyest where’s my award?

We’ve done the same but with goodwill, and let’s not devolve this into a pissing contest on loi supporters, I don’t feel the need to tell everyone when im watching rovers get mauled. I’ll give you a can of coke if you want

    • Good one lewis as such an avid supporter im sure then you are aware the team is now in transition and will lose good or bad some of the older members in key positions. How about focusing on the next crop and seeking some positives.

      Reply
    • Sure by bringing McCarthy, Hoolahan & Coleman into the squad it at least gives us the option to change things up to face different tactical challenges. If the manager shows an openness to considering a player that doesn’t fit his usual mold.

But we need to go deeper than the next squad transition and look long term, we need to teach youngsters to be comfortable with the ball at their feet and to understand the tactical side of the game as they do on the continent.

and we need to realise that now that the Premiership is a global league we are highly unlikely to be guaranteed a handful of Irish players in the league leading teams like the ManU’s and Liverpool’s of old, they go to Africa and S. America for players now not to the ddsl. If Irish players are making it in the premiership less and less.. then i look forward to the day when Rovers has a few Irish internationals again and can actually get a few results at the group stages of European competition. We need to give them an alternative route to the top.

We need sustainability in the Irish game and not just event junkies filling the Aviva now and then making sure all the money goes directly to Delaneys coffers instead of spread out to the grassroots of the game.

Not sure many of them even knew we lost, they were so drunk. Henry McKean of Newstalk said he saw fans tucking into beer at 7.30am with their breakfasts and found it hard to find any coherent enough to interview for the radio – why would anyone award that behaviour?

    Reply

Look at the Russian and Polish fans who beat the crap out of each other in Warsaw.

    The constant anti-racism marketing.

Football and football fans have a bad reputation for a reason.

Racism, homophobia, rivalry, nationalism – often aggressively and violently displayed by football hooligans.

The Irish didn’t display any of those, despite not winning etc etc.

That deserves to be highlighted – football is only a game, win or lose.

When I visited Poland last week, the locals in Poznan nearly always had something positive to say about the Irish.

I thought that was cool, so what’s the problem?
