GALWAY U21 BOSS Anthony Cunningham has expressed his interest in taking over the county’s senior hurling side, despite the fact that John McIntyre remains in a job.
Cunningham – who leads his side into All-Ireland action against Dublin on Saturday – said that he is parking all thoughts of the top job until after this weekend, but that anyone with such close ties to the Tribesmen would be mad to turn down such a role.
“I think anyone who has played for Galway would be interested in the challenge,” Cunningham told the Independent.
“I think they are better than they have shown in the last few years and the pedigree is there. You have a good stream of young players, too, so there is plenty to work with.
“But John McIntyre is still there and you have to respect that. It’s a decision for the clubs to make now and all our concentration is on this final.”
McIntyre, meanwhile, is waiting to discover if his appointment for 2012 will be ratified after an emotional meeting with the Galway County Board earlier this week.
While he cited injuries as one of the main reasons behind a poor league campaign, he admitted that he could not understand how his players failed to cope in the Championship defeat to Waterford.
The former Galway centre-back was asked why the passion displayed in the meeting was absent from his players in a torrid campaign, with the Chairman announcing that a decision on whether or not to keep McIntyre in the role would be taken at the next meeting of the County Board.
