Two Louth fans found guilty of assaulting referee

A judge will sentence the pair, who attacked Martin Sludden at Croke Park in 2010, later today.

TWO MEN WHO were accused of attacking a GAA referee in July 2010 have been found guilty today, according to the RTE website.

Ugly scenes broke out at the final whistle of Louth and Meath’s Leinster Senior Football final at Croke Park nearly two years ago when referee Martin Sludden wrongly awarded Meath a winning goal in stoppage time.

Sludden was confronted by a number of fans before being hastily escorted off the field by Gardai and Joseph Conlon (23) and Paul Grimes (50), both from Dundalk, were charged with assault.

The pair denied the charges and Judge Bridget Reilly adjourned the case until today for legal submissions.

Sludden, who later admitted the error, withdrew his complaint and didn’t give evidence but Judge Reilly has found them both guilty and sentencing is due to take place this afternoon.
