ONE OF THE two Irish national ice hockey team members arrested in Croatia at the weekend faces trial in the country for damaging property whilst on a night out following the team’s world championship exit.

Ross O’Driscoll, 31, has been indicted by the court authorities for the destruction and damage to other people’s property and now faces trial, a spokesperson for the Zagreb court authorities confirmed to TheJournal.ie.

Appearing at the county court in Zagreb, he pleaded guilty to the charges.

He was released from custody but has had his passport seized and cannot leave the country ahead of a trial at the municipal court in one or two weeks time.

O’Driscoll could face up to six months in prison or a fine of up to €8,000.

Both he and team mate Robert Leckey, 32, were arrested in Zagreb on Saturday night but Leckey was later released without charge and is free to return home.

The two men were part of the Irish ice hockey team that endured a miserable tournament in Croatia where Ireland lost 6-0 to Bulgaria and 5-0 to China in the first two rounds before they were trashed 14-0 by Iceland on Saturday night, ending up last in their group.

A spokesperson for the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs told TheJournal.ie that the two men had not sought any consular assistance.
