The ex-Birmingham player complained of chest pains this afternoon, before undergoing surgery in hospital and having a a coronary stent fitted.

A statement from Birmingham FC confirmed the news:

“Everybody at Birmingham City FC would like to send our best wishes to club legend Trevor Francis following news that he is recovering in hospital from a suspected heart attack.

“The former Blues striker and manager is much loved by everybody associated with the club and we’d like to wish Trevor a speedy recovery.”

Francis’ condition is understood not to be life-threatening, after a friend of the family told the Daily Mail that he was expected to be allowed return home by the weekend.

Francis enjoyed a successful career as a footballer, before going on to work as both a football manager and a pundit. He is perhaps best remembered for being Britain’s first £1million footballer.
